Overcome Fear of Heights – What is Fear of Heights?

It is estimated that more than 7% of the adult population suffers from some form of fear of heights.

It is estimated that more than 7% of the adult population suffers from some form of fear of heights. These fears may be as simple as being afraid of climbing a ladder all the way to not be able to cross a bridge or an airplane in the sky. Sometimes these fears may be hidden, like other phobias and it makes it more difficult to overcome fear of heights. 

What separates the fear of heights other phobias, is the fact that often the reaction to being in a high place is frozen in one place. In the case of a scale which means you can not or will not go up or down and you basically frozen and afraid to move. Most phobias are a time temporary and tend to move fairly quickly, but take special precautions if they know they are afraid of heights phobia. 

Another issue surrounding a fear of heights is that most people are convinced they can simply avoid any situation which may place them in a high place. As we have worked with many who have overcome fear of heights, we see that this idea may fail and could be dangerous if you are in a high place unexpected. 

The important thing to understand that you try to overcome fear of heights (and other phobias as well) is that you’re dealing with an emotional reaction to a situation of perceived danger. At a certain moment in time your brain has learned that for some types of perceived threats can draw your attention to kicking your emotions into high gear. If these reactions are not receiving address, your mind will begin to use the emotional response to other perceived fears. Therefore we find that most people have phobias several years. Again because we have allowed our minds and lazy, rather than trying to determine whether a situation is dangerous or not … it simply takes hold of your emotions and uses fear as a defense.

  1. Interesting article. I have a terrible fear of heights. I didn’t realize how bad it was until recently though. My daughter talked me into getting on a horse and that just terrified me. As you can imagine, I didn’t stay on the horse very long.
