The basic mechanism for stress and anxiety reduction involves deep breathing. Breathing is a way to respond to the demands upon the body in a fight or flight reaction to a stimulus. Fight or flight is one way the body will help itself remain safe physically.
STEP 1- Assume a comfortable position. Place your left hand over top of your navel, and place you right hand so that it comfortably rests on your left. Your eyes should remain open.
STEP 2- Imagine a hollow space beneath where your hands are resting. Inhale through your nose. As you inhale think about fresh air filling that hollow space. Your hands will rise as you fill the space with air. Your inhalation should last between 3 and 6 seconds. All the while you are concentrating on the situation, whatever it may be…
STEP3- Slowly exhale through your mouth. As you exhale you will feel the carbon dioxide rush from your body removing the stressor and telling yourself you are calm, and that every problem has a solution. Try and make the exhale last a little longer than your inhale. Repeat as needed. Your body will train itself to automatically respond this way even without your prompting within a few months. There after, you will be able to handle stress and anxiety.
