The Present Moment – It’s a Gift

The past is history, the future is unknown – all we have is the present.

Success is subjective. What is your idea of success? Many will say money is a measure of success but this isn’t so for everyone (take a look at Charlie Sheen!) Some may think fame is the ultimate success but again, this is not so for everyone (and it certainly wasn’t for the late Amy Winehouse). For most though, success goes hand in hand with happiness.

There are numerous ways in which to achieve happiness and many, many books written on the subject.

Countless people will say that it is important to have goals; a dream or something you wish to achieve or aspire to. And while this is very true, these dreams or goals should not let you lose the moment.

Perhaps you are in a job you don’t particularly like; you count down each hour wishing for the end of the day. Or simply can’t wait until payday when you can go out and buy something you want, or spend Friday night getting drunk, seeing a loved one or whatever; but what about the moment? Here and now. What is it you are missing by wishing this moment away? What can you be doing right now to improve your moment rather than rushing through it to the next?

It’s also important to understand that happiness should not solely depend on you getting what you want! If this was the case, one of everything would surely be enough for everyone.

It is so easy for the moment you are in right now to get lost in thoughts of the future or even memories of the past, but if we do that – the moment is lost. The absolute best way we can be prepared for any moment in the future is to be fully conscious in the present

You can do this by becoming consciously aware of the choices you make in every moment.

We call the here and now the present – guess why? It’s a gift.

OK, so what about those moments that are terrible? Even these are important. We get through awful moments and learn from them – then they are filed away into our past.

Wonderful moments are the ones we want to last forever and when they too have passed, we will remember them in our future.

It’s imperative to be in your moment, truly immerse yourself in whatever you are doing right now.

Each moment naturally links to the next and by being there in each of those moments you will, by the end, have a beautiful chain of memories to pass on to your loved ones.

“It might take a million incarnations until you gain a human nervous system, if you do not use it to remember and rejoice in your sacred nature, you have traded a diamond for a head of lettuce.” (Brahmananda Saraswati)

If you are not happy in your present moment, take a look at your thoughts. Change your thoughts and you will change the way you feel, because after all, inner happiness is the fuel for success. And the surest way to anything you want in life is to be and feel happy right now!
