Understanding and Treating Depression

Depression is a serious medical condition involving the balance of brain chemicals, which can severely disrupt the ability to function well if not treated properly.

Depression is often not diagnosed in individuals who suffer from it because they are often unaware of the feelings they have. They feel the constant state of melancholy is normal and while they do not like to feel this way they don’t feel there is anything they can do. When a person suffers from depression they do not derive pleasure from regular activities. The person will also feel sadness, hurt, anger, tired, and many other symptoms. If these feelings are not constant and pass you should not diagnose yourself with a depression disorder, it just means you are having an off day.

To diagnose depression you need to seek a psychologist or other qualified professional. You will also need to feel these symptoms for more than six months. When you feel the condition is affecting your normal abilities to function you need to seek help.

Depression has been a disorder for over two hundred years. Despite the recent advertisements on depression history has shown casualness for the disorder in not treating it properly.

There are many treatments for depression in today’s market. You have to understand the symptoms and causes before you should submit to treatments as there are many levels of therapy and medications.

Common Treatments:

  • Drug Therapy
  • Psychotherapy, Counseling
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy
  • Natural Remedies
  • Massage Therapy
  • Friendship Circles

The most common form of treatment from a psychologist’s perspective will be antidepressants and counseling. Antidepressants should never be combined and you should have thorough research on the type of antidepressant before submitting to that form of treatment. There are side effects of the medications available even though they are supposed to help your mood increase to a more happy level they can have the adverse affect. Treatment with drug therapy or counseling can be costly, but suffering from depression can become more costly to your body as well as your job.

Mild forms of depression may not require medications; however major depression requires drug therapy as well as counseling. In some cases major depression has led to inpatient procedures to help get control back.

If you know someone who suffers from depression, especially a less mild form you should facilitate the help they need. Among other symptoms of depression can be thoughts of suicide, muscle pain, wakefulness, and disorganization. Often those who have depression do not believe they need help or assistance because they are unaware of the majority of consequences it has on their lives.
