Wintertime Blues

Winter can be a depressing time of year, which can bring on depression for some people. Suicide rates usually climb during winter months, but there are things you can do to help ease the doom and gloom that usually come with winter.

Winter is the perfect time of year to start feeling down and blue. It’s cold outside (in most places) and it can be dreary, wet, snowy and dead looking. It can create a state of mind that is depressing. Gone are the sun and the cheery outdoors where the trees are green and full, and the temperatures make you want to be out of doors. Winter, on the contrary, makes you want to be in doors. This can bring on depression, winter blues, and a feeling of dread.

Winter months tend to have higher suicide rates. Being trapped inside and seeing the cold, wintery out of doors through your windows, can make you feel down, and the world look doom and gloom. But there are ways to keep up your positive disposition. One way is to remind yourself that winter is only temporary. Keep a calendar close by that you can mark off the days as they go by, bringing you closer to warmer temperatures and sunny skies. Set a date in the winter where you can do something you love, like a massage, or getting your hair done. Get plenty of exercise to keep yourself from packing on those unwanted winter pounds. If you have a treadmill, use the treadmill since the weather may be too wet, or cold to get out. Put on some soothing music as you walk or watch your favorite, uplifting TV show. Exercise can keep the needed “feel-good” endorphins flying to keep your spirits up. Do other fun things that can be indoor activities such as go to a good movie, bowling, or anything else that can be done indoors and is fun for you and the family.

Winter doesn’t have to be a time of dread. You can use the poor-weather days to get things done around the house such as clean out closets, get things together for a spring yard sale, or do some painting and sprucing up of the house. When spring comes, you’ll be ahead of the gang when it comes to spring cleaning. You can also use the indoor time to get other chores done that you’ve been putting off like organizing your home office, do some filing, or going through bills you’ve been putting off. When spring gets here, you will have all those dreaded chores done and you really can use the warm spring days to get out and enjoy!
