The amount of sleep we need depends on what activities we engage in, our age, and the amount of food we take in. for example for infants, they need about 12 hours of sleep a day, while teens need at least eight to nine hours a day.

For adults however, they only need 6 to 7 hours of sleep each day.

A common knowledge is that each of us needs at least 8 hours of sleep. Studies have proven that each person’s sleeping need varies. There are those that are called long sleeper and others short sleepers. Some can even get by with only three hours of sleep. It is important that you take into consideration how you feel. After eight hours of sleep do you still feel sleepy? Do you feel refreshed, contented and energized? The answers to these questions will tell you how much sleep you need. Studies have proven that sleep have great effect on the wellness of your skin and face. Lack of sleep may cause you to develop pimples and eye bugs which are very unattractive.

The amount of sleep you need is affected by several factors including:

•    The quality of the sleep you get
•    The genetic need you inherited
•    Your sleep hygiene which refers to activities like drinking coffee, alcohol or maybe smoking
•    Your circadian rhythm or your 24 hour daily cycle

Exercise, drinking and smoking have great effects on the amount and quality of your sleep. The activities you do in bed like watching TV or reading also effect you sleep as well as the amount of light you are exposed to like staying in front of the computer monitor all day. These will all take effect on how much sleep you will need.

The Sleep Debt

You develop a sleep debt whenever you fail to sleep enough. If you sleep debt gets high enough you will eventually have to pay it. You will need to replenish this debt by sleeping more over the following days. Not getting enough sleep will make you face serious consequences. Studies have shown that lack of sleep decreases the person’s performance and affects his daily routine. The alertness is greatly affected and you will feel sleepy at certain times of the day. Getting less than the enough sleep you need will also affect your memory. It will impair you ability to process information and think. This may cause injury and the quality of work you will be doing will be greatly reduced. This is one of the reasons why some children in school get low grades. Children who do not get enough sleep have higher risks of injury.

The bottom line is that whenever you wake up, you must feel refreshed and comfortable and you should not be able to encounter any feeling of sleepiness during the course of the day. Otherwise, you may be experiencing an unrecognized sleeping disorder.
