Top 10 Hospitals for Family Counselors

Although most of us associate hospitals with nurses and doctors, there is a strong need for many other medical-related professionals in most hospitals. One of the more important, but lesser-known, jobs is for family counselors.

These are the employees that take care of patients who are having mental problems affecting a family dynamic. Although many family counselors start their own practices, some work in doctor’s offices or hospitals.

So where should you look for this type of job? Luckily, U.S. News & World Report compiled a list of the top 10 hospitals for psychiatry, where you would be likely to find openings for family counselors and a variety of other mental health-related occupations.

Nine of the 10 hospitals included on the list offer child, adolescent, and geriatric counseling, as well as consultations and outpatient care. They also offer inpatient psychiatric care, including partial hospitalization and psychiatric emergency services.

Menninger Clinic only offers adolescent psychiatry services on an outpatient basis and partial hospitalization for patients.

The top 10 hospitals for psychiatry include:

1. Massachusetts General Hospital – This Boston-based nonprofit hospital is owned by Partners HealthCare System, Inc.
   • Physicians and dentists: 1,886 full-time/567 part-time
   • Registered nurses: 2,216 full-time/1,624 part-time
   • Licensed practical nurses: 33 full-time/15 part-time
2. Johns Hopkins Hospital – Based in Baltimore, this nonprofit hospital is operated by the Johns Hopkins Health System.
   • Registered nurses: 1,979 full-time/504 part-time
   • Licensed practical nurses: 20 full-time/5 part-time
3. McLean Hospital – This nonprofit hospital based in Belmont, Mass., is owned by Partners HealthCare System, Inc.

4. New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell – This New York City-based nonprofit hospital is operated by the New York Presbyterian Healthcare System.
