Almond Milk vs. Soy Milk

Almond milk and soy milk are nondairy milk substitutes that provide low calorie health benefits. Both milk alternatives will help to lower cholesterol and blood pressure and reduce the risks of some diseases.

In modern times people may be looking for alternatives to milk with less cholesterol and saturated fat. Others may seek a milk substitute due to lactose intolerance or allergies. Some popular alternatives are almond milk and soy milk which can be found in most grocery stores. Both soy and almond milk have no saturated fat, trans fat or cholesterol so they’re good for dieters.  

Both soy and almond milk come in cartons that you can keep on cabinet shelves. The cartons don’t have to be refrigerated until they’ve been opened. People appreciate the convenience of the milk alternatives. Both of them are good for dieters. They are nutritious and low in fat and calories with no cholesterol. Their flavors are lighter than dairy milk and better with sweets and desserts.

Soy milk is a very popular protein supplement and it is more commonly used than almond milk. There are more kinds and flavors of soy milk. Soy milk nog is available in some grocery stores. Almond milk is lower in calories than milk but soy milk has more protein and soy provides complete protein. One health benefit soy milk provides that almond milk does not comes from the isoflavones in soy milk. Benefits of the isoflavones include helping to reduce cholesterol, lowering the risk of cancer and osteoporosis and helping to lessen some symptoms of menopause.

Both almond milk and soy milk provide as much as 1 to 4 grams of fiber. Both of the milk alternatives supply the B Vitamins which will increase metabolism. Almond and soy milk also provide the essential minerals phosphorus, magnesium, copper, manganese and zinc. Having those minerals helps to oxygenate the blood and regulate blood pressure.

Almond milk is lower calorie and has less fat so it is preferable for dieting. Almond milk provides more manganese, selenium and Vitamin E which helps to prevent cancer and helps healing and skin health. Almond milk also provides calcium and magnesium. Selenium helps the immune and reproductive systems and the thyroid. The Vitamin E is an antioxidant the stops free radicals from preventing damage to cells.

One 8 ounce cup of unsweetened almond milk has 70 – 90 calories, 3 grams of fat, 1 gram of fiber and 1.5 grams of protein. An 8 ounce cup of unsweetened soy milk has 90 -110 calories, 4 grams of fat, 1 gram of fiber and 7 -10 grams of protein. Both soy and almond milk offer many health benefits to consumers. The nondairy milks are good low calorie low fat low carb nutritious alternatives to dairy milk.
