Are Apples Bad for Your Teeth?

Apples are healthy for you, but are they good for your teeth?

Apples can be a nutritious snack for anyone who is looking to diet, live a healthier lifestyle or take advantage of foods which are high in fiber or vitamins. Are apples healthy for your teeth though? Here’s what you should know about how apples can affect your teeth.

Apples are High in Acid

The biggest problem with apples is that they contain a high percentage of acid. This makes them a very bad choice for anyone who is trying to maintain good dental hygiene. The acid can cause your teeth to erode its natural enamel. If you eat apples on a regular basis, you may find yourself at the dentist for an enamel applicant.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

If you are going to continue eating apples, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene. This means that you should brush your teeth, floss and also consider using a good mouthwash to get rid of gingivitis. Keep in mind that you are not supposed to brush your teeth immediately after eating foods which are high in acid because it can actually be counteractive and lead to erosion even quicker. It is ideal to wait about an hour or so after eating an apple before you brush your teeth.

While apples are not the best option for your teeth, this does not mean that you should stop eating them. Apples offer numerous health benefits. If you are someone who is trying to lose weight or just eat nutritious food, it is a good idea to incorporate apples into your diet. Maintaining good oral hygiene otherwise is the best way to prevent apples from causing any serious damage to your teeth.
