The foods we eat and the time of the day we eat them affect our state of mind. Here’s a list of foods to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner to enhance your brain power.

Breakfast

For a good breakfast, the most important meal of the day because you’ll be needing a lot of energy for the days work and activity, foods consists of low fat are advisable like lean meat and fruits. These foods induce mental alertness.

To coffee lovers, one or two cups of coffee at breakfast increase mental sharpness and better reaction time but 3 or more cups of coffee give rise to over-stimulation of caffeine which can trigger the reduction of mental acuity. The same holds true for tea.

Avoid eating sausage, bacon and eggs because they are rich in fat and cholesterol. They are slow to digest and tend to direct the flow of blood away from the brain and reduce mental alertness.

Lunch

Recommended foods for lunch are protein-rich foods like poultry and fish which are high in amino acids and tyrosine. According to experts, amino acids are carried across the protective filter known as blood-brain barriers. When they reached these barriers, it is converted into the alertness chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine.

Avoid eating rice or noodles, bread and sweet deserts because they will make you sleepy and less responsive.

For dinner, advisable foods to eat are foods rich in carbohydrates like potatoes, corn, pasta, lentils, rice, noodles, bread, cereals, fruit, low fat dairy products, pancakes and many others. It is believed that carbohydrates are converted into serotonin, a calming neurotransmitter which makes a person to feel more relaxed and help attain a better sleep.
