Could Co Q10 be the New Cure All for Disease?
It is in found in every human cell. Without it 95% of the bodies energy would be non-existing. Human cells would die without it.
Co Q10 is also known as- Coenzyme Q 10, Co Q 10, vitamin q 10, Ubiquinone, and Vitamin Q. The name Ubiquinone, comes from the word ubiquitous, which literally means “found everywhere.” However, organs with the highest energy needs (heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs ) have the highest Co Q10 concentration. It is a vitamin like substance found in every cell in the human body. Age, certain medications, and certain medical conditions decrease the levels of Co Q10.
Cells need an energy source to survive. Without energy, the cells die. The mitochondria is the part of a cell responsible for 95% of the bodies energy production in the form of ATP. Sugars, amino acids, and fats are broken down to make this energy. Co Q10 resides in the mitochondria part of the cell. It’s main job is to facilitate the transformation of fats and sugars into ATP energy. Without Co Q10… ATP energy could not be produced, cells would not have energy, and the cells will eventually die.
Since Co Q10 was discovered in 1956, it has mainly been indicated for use in mitochondrial disease and other metabolic disorders. But, science has discovered many possible uses for Co Q10 over the last decade.
Co Q10 As An Antioxidant
It is proven that patients taking statin drugs (used to lower LDL and overall cholesterol) have depleted Co Q10 levels. Co Q10 has also already been proven to be an antioxidant because it can transfer electrons. But, the value of Co Q10 as an antioxidant is still being debated. It is transferred in the blood stream largely by low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoproteins (HDL). Keep in mind that high levels of LDL (especially when subjected to oxidation) and low levels of HDL promote coronary heart disease. Basically, Co Q10 is thought to prevent the oxidation of lipoproteins.
Parkinson’s Disease
Patients with Parkinson’s disease have also been shown to have lower levels of Co Q10 Recent research by the National Institutes of Health suggest that increasing Co Q10 could increase dopamine levels and protect free radicals from damaging brain cells.
Hypertension
Patients with hypertension may also have depleted Co Q10 levels. Recent testing indicates that by correcting an endogenous pro-vitamin deficiency, Co Q10 can lower systolic blood pressure by up to 17 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by up to 10 mm Hg.
Other areas that Co Q10 is being studied:
- Huntington’s disease
- Asthma
- Heart failure
- Migraine headaches
- Cardiac arrest
- Cancer
- Macular degeneration that is age related
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Periodontitis (gum disease)
- Idiopathic spermatozoa (not producing enough sperm)
- Kidney failure
- Muscular dystrophies
- Diabetes
I do not know if it is a “cure all”, but it sure deserves more attention and research!

Interesting article! I have a PhD in Holistic Nutrition and used to take CoQ10 but believe I’m better off taking whole food supplements which help my own body to produce more CoQ10.

Thank you for enlightening me on the benefits of Co Q10. Although I have heard of it, before I read your article, I had no idea of the importance of Co Q10.

Thank you all for the comments!
Nemotak-
You can buy capsules of Co Q 10 over the shelf at your local Wal-Mart, Rite Aid, etc.. However, many of the brands have fillers or excipients. I buy it for my daughter over the internet; there are more options, and some are orphan. It can be packaged as a capsule, gel, liquid, powder…As to food sources, it is mainly found in organ meats, especially beef organs. Hope this answers your question. If not, just send me a message.
