Dangerous E-numbers 2
There are loads of E-numbers in our foods and other products. Know which are dangerous and which not?
In this article I am continue to look at the Colors of the E-numbers. I suggest that you start reading my first article on healthmad.com.
E127: Erythrosine
This is Red No.3. It can be found in sweets, snack foods, canned fruit, custard mix, bakery and more. There are reports that this can cause light sensitivity. It is also linked to increased levels of thyroid hormone. In 1990 a study revealed that Erthrosine caused thyroid cancer in rats. Has been banned in Norway.
E128: Red 2G
This is an interesting one. I don’t know where this one is used and what are the dangers associated with it but it has been banned in many countries including Australia. It is still allowed in the UK
E129: Allura red AC
Orange-red color which can be found in drinks, sweets, drinks, synthetics, cosmetics, condiments and medications. Allura red has been found to be connected with cancer in mice. Has been banned in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and Sweden.
E131: Patent blue V
Again I could not find out much about this one but I know it has been banned in Australia, Norway and the USA
E132: Indigotine, Indigo carmine
Often used in tablets. Can also be found in biscuits, ice cream, baked good, sweets and confectionery. Scientists think that it can cause allergic reactions, breathing problems, nausea, skin rashes, vomiting and high blood pressure. Banned in Norway
E133: Brilliant blue FCF
Commonly used in sweets, drinks and dairy products. Not sure about the dangers but I am sure there are plenty since it is banned in Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland.
E142 – Green S
Can be found in jelly, cake mixes, packet breadcrumbs and canned peas. Again I am not sure about possible dangers but it has been banned in Sweden, USA and Norway
E151 – Brilliant Black BN, Black PN
This is used in cake mixes and brown sauce. Another one where I am not sure about dangers but the list of countries that banned it is long. (Austria, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and USA)
