Body’s  energy needs drops and it demands more  nutrients as one starts ageing. Degenerative changes which take place past middle-age  can be prevented by the proper intake of diet. A good and proper diet can  prevent or at least slow down certain  age-related degeneration problems such as Osteoporosis, Diabetes and Heart ailments.

As age progresses body composition changes with age; fatty tissue increases  and muscle mass decreases. Metabolism slows down and few calories  are required. Nearly 1,800 calories are required  for a 50 year old person but as he reaches the age of 70  the requirement of calories will drop to 1,440. The human body is likely to gain weight if the  person does not keep a check on his diet since the body  becomes less effecient  in absorbing certain nutrients.   An older person will need certain  extra amount of the following  essential nutrients.

            A)  To maintain healthy bones and prevent  Osteoporosis Calcium is required. Include  sesame and mustard seeds, leafy greens, ragi atta, figs, milk and milk products and fish in your diet.

           B)  To absorb the calcium  Vitamin D is necessary so add fish which is the best source of this Vitamin. It is also found in ghee, butter and eggs but the best natural  source is sunlight.

           C)  Eat dairy products, meat shrimps and eggs which is rich in Vitamin B12 required to build red blood cells and maintain healthy nerves.
