Exotic Superfoods
A look at the superfood phenomenon and some exotic foods that are categorized as superfoods, their amazing nutritional value and the health benefits associated with them.

They are called superfoods because of their powerful nutritional content and the excellent benefits they provide for our health and well being. Superfoods provide more nutrients for each calorie we consume than do other foods. These power packed foods can control hypertension, lower or eliminate bad cholesterol, and they stand guard against those unpredictable free radicals.
Food manufacturers are not allowed to market foods under the banner of “superfoods”. However, there is much scientific research available that points to the superior nutritional value of these so called superfoods. Generally, a superfood is one that contains significant Phytonutrients, which are essentially plant derived, even though some animal products have been placed in this category.
The list of superfoods is constantly growing as new discoveries are made. Popular ones include blueberries, cranberries, broccoli, tomato and Flax. But there are many unusual and exotic foods that fall into the superfood category. So if you have never felt adventurous enough to try a mango, perhaps this article will change your mind.
Acai Berries
These wonder berries grow wild atop palm trees in rainforests around the world. Acai berries contain omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9, along with protein and polyphenols, and is a rich source of dietary fiber. The omega fatty acids are known to play a role in lowering blood cholesterol levels and slowing the aging process. Like many other superfoods, the acai berry is known to contain high levels of antioxidant vitamins.
Mangoes
These juicy fruits are loaded with antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Mangoes contain enzymes that cleanse the bowels and are thought to improve the functioning of our nerve tissues in parts of our body including the brain, the heart and the muscles. But there is more. Researchers have found that eating mangoes can make you happy as they contain significant amounts of tryptophan. Mangoes also have the capacity to heal and prevent cancer.
Okra
Okra is a staple in Creole and Caribbean cooking. But this vegetable is famous for more than a delicious gumbo soup. It has high concentrations of calcium, fiber, folic acid and vitamin B-6, which can help in the healthy development of fetuses, among other things. Other benefits of this superfood include its ability to stabilize blood sugar and improve bowel function. Its probiotic effect is well documented as is its healing effect on ulcers and lung inflammation.
Goji
Goji berries or wolfberries contain eighteen amino acids and twenty one trace minerals. In addition, they contain several vitamins like vitamin E, B2, B6 and B1 as well as 13% protein and high levels of antioxidants. If it sounds like a wonder fruit, it most likely is. While knowledge of its benefits are fairly new to the west, this fruit has been packing a punch for centuries in eastern countries. Goji berries have been used for anything from lowering high blood pressure and cholesterol to treating eye and skin problems.
Quinoa
Pronounced keen-wah, this is a grain like seed from the spinach family and has truly earned the name of “supergrain”. Quinoa contains magnesium, copper, fiber and nine essential amino acids. It is credited with treating and preventing major diseases including diabetes and breast cancer. It is a panacea for vegetarians because of its high protein content and celiacs love the fact that it is gluten free.
Simply put, superfoods describe those foods that are beneficial to one’s health and wellness. The ones listed here are just a fraction of the many life sustaining foods we have around us, many of which often go unnoticed.
