Foods That are Good for Your Teeth

This article talks about foods that can help combat tooth decay and help you keep a healthy white smile.

What foods are good for your teeth?

So, we all know that there are foods that are bad for our teeth.  When we eat food that is saturated in carbohydrates or sugar, nasty little creatures called bacteria, feast on the remnants left behind and while feasting, they produce and acid that causes tooth decay.  So with that said, did you know that there are foods that can actually help fight these bacteria?  That’s right; some foods can actually keep those little monsters from producing acids.  You will essentially be starving them and in return you will have a healthier mouth and a beautiful smile.

Celery is a great way to battle the bacteria calling your mouth home.  Aside from celery’s most obvious benefit, which is, that it is good for your body, celery causes increased chewing and saliva production.  Any time you produce saliva you are killing bad bacteria in your mouth.  Celery does not have a very pleasing taste but you may consider snaking on it, rather than potato chips, which is the number one producer of plaque that the bacteria find so tasty.  The increased water in the celery also serves as way to help wash your mouth while you eat; it is a natural way to brush!

Onions and Shiitake Mushrooms are also a means to kill bacteria.  When you eat an onion raw the compounds found in onions are in peak performing condition and will kill those annoying teeth eaters.  You may have to deal with bad breath, but the benefits of having healthy teeth are well worth popping a piece of chewing gum afterwards.  Shiitake Mushrooms work in much the same way.  They may not kill the bacteria, but it keeps them from being able to make the plaque that eventually, without proper dental hygiene cause painful cavities.

The tastiest of all options would be cheese; this food has several properties in which it helps your teeth.  Cheese causes increased production of saliva and we know now, that saliva kills bad bacteria in your mouth.  Cheese can also help save your teeth from getting stained.  It provides a protective wall on your teeth enamel that saves your teeth from staining.

Stains and discoloration are a common problem for many people all across the world.  You can naturally whiten teeth with foods found at home, like strawberries and oranges.  You can brush your teeth with strawberries every other day, and you can rub the back of an orange rind against your teeth.  You could always use things like teeth gel, but sometimes there are side effects that make the work, not worth the efforts.  It is far easier and safer sometimes, to simply look at what you have lying around the house that can preserve your teeth.

It is nice to know that you can eat foods that are good for your body and good for your teeth.  You may not like to eat raw onions, but the benefits are worth it.  With the knowledge available to us today, we can keep our teeth clean and white for the rest of our lives.  Eating these foods, are the most pleasant way to keep teeth clean and white.  Everyone loves to eat, so why not eat things that are going to benefit you mind, body and your teeth?
