Fruit Juice – Not as Healthy as You May Think

Fruit juice such as orange juice and fruit smoothies may seem like they are a healthy food, but we would always recommend that you don’t drink too many of these.

Fruit juice such as orange juice and fruit smoothies may seem like they are a healthy food, but we would always recommend that you don’t drink too many of these.

One of the main reasons for this is that fruit juice is very high in sugar and this can lead to all sorts of problems such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Because juice is in liquid form it’s also really easy to consume lots of calories in one go. As an example a 250ml glass of orange juice has around 25 grams of sugar which is enough to raise your blood sugar levels fast enough to cause an emergency increase in insulin, which in turn will lead to increased fat storage and will switch off any fat burning. The amount of sugar in orange juice is also only slightly less that the same serving size of a cola drink.

This is all from an average serving size and the thing is that most people have larger serving sizes in any case and usually consume fruit juices for breakfast as they are seen as a healthier option along with breakfast cereals or toast which can accelerate the rise in blood sugar and the inevitable crash that’s going to happen.

The key here is to not be taken in by the advertising; fruit is generally healthy but only in moderation.

Food companies will tell you that their juice is high in vitamin c and is a great way to start your day but the reality is that drinking just one glass of orange juice a day is enough to increase your risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 20%.

In addition to this drinking excessive amount of fruit juice can help to accelerate tooth decay because of the acids and sugars and it can also make you over eat later in the day due to its glycemic load (basically the amount of sugar and the speed at which it gets dumped into your blood).

You may even find that some unscrupulous manufacturers may add additional sugar into the juice to make it even sweeter (and therefore more appealing). In some cases you even find that they add artificial sweeteners and chemical preservatives

This is one of the main reasons to make sure that you always read the ingredients labels on any food that you consume.
