COLDS and flu are rampant today because o the unpredictable weather that could either switch to full-blast sunshine or cool down to a heavy downpour. Combating these illnesses could only add more hassle to a student’s already hectic schedule. Aside from taking vitamins and drinking enough liquids, it is also advisable for us spices that we can include in our daily menu that not only adds texture to our taste buds but could also keep the dreaded colds and flu at bay.
-
Hot and spicy food
Some people count on the congestion-relieving properties of horseradish, chili and spicy sauces. Just add one or more of these ingredients to your favorite dish that is of course compatible with them. Or you can simply add a spicy sauce for an extra zip in a jiffy.
-
Garlic
This fragrant bulb contains a flavoring agent called alliin, which acts as a decongestant.. Studies also show that garlic is an antioxidant and can destroy free radicals (these are active oxygen molecules that damages cells). So for an oxidant-free body, just add garlic liberally to your favorite food.
- Stay hydrated with plenty of liquids. Instead of drinking fizzy, sweetened or caffeinated drinks, which only increases fluid output, take plenty of water and pure fruit juices. Hot beverages work better for some people , so consider brewing chamomile, peppermint or sip hot water with a squeeze of lemon. Ginger too can also do wonders. Pour a cup of boiling water over 2 tablespoons of freshly grated ginger and let it steep for 5 or 10 minutes.
- Chicken soup
It’s been called nature’s penicillin and is on top of the list for its curative powers. Hot chicken soup helps clear clogged airways, and the nourishing broth gives more energy. Just add the aforementioned ingredients according to your taste buds and you can get rid of colds and flu in no time.
Of course, these tips would not be effective when coupled with skipped meals and lots of caffeine because these would only make an individual more susceptible to illnesses.
