Its distinct color are derived from betalain pigments, particularly the betecyanin type. Betecyanin are red-violet in color, in contrast to the betaxanthins which are yellowish. This very lively color makes it one of nature’s coloring agent. (Know more about Betalains in this article.)

Beets are a good souce of anti-oxidants. In fact, it contains a variety of them – starting from the evident betalain pigments, Vitamin C and then, its manganese content. Beets are also rich in fiber, Vitamin A, calcium, iron, carbohydrates, copper, phosporus, potassium, zinc and lots of folic acid.  They also contain Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5 and B6. However, they have a very low glycemic index which still makes it the healthier option, dieters or otherwise. Did you know that beets are used to produce refined sugar? Not only that, but betaine supplements are one of the by-products of the sugar beet process.

Betaine is another nutrient found in beets. It is a form of a Vitamin B-complex called choline. Betaines help prevent both liver and heart diseases. They help our livers to function well so we may be able to eliminate our wastes better and break down fats more effectviely. On the other hand, betaines’ anti-inflammatory property promotes heart health by preventing the plasma homocysteine which increases risk of cardiovascular illnesses.

The anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agents prevent in this vegetable makes it a very powerful weapon against cancer cells – of any type.

Why is Beetroot healthy?

The fiber in beets helps lower bad cholesterol levels in the body. The fiber in beets, and that in carrots are two types of fiber that may be distinguised from all the other dietary fibers found in fruits and other vegetables. There are studies that suggest that the fiber in these plants may provide us more health benefits, especially to our digestive and cardiovascular system.

The Vitamin C and beta-carotene in them helps strengthen our respiratory system. It helps us fight diseases such as asthma and lung cancer. Beets are great energy builders which comes from its carbohydrate and sugar content. Its Vitamain A content helps providing our eyes strength against age-related diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Its potassium content helps prevent the risk of strokes. The mineral boron is present in beetroot, as well which hleps increase productive sex hormones, thereby making it an aphrodisiac.
