Health Benefits of Watermelon

More than just a fun summer fruit, watermelon is good all year round for your entire body!

Watermelon is packed with nutrition. In fact, there are more nutrients per calorie than any other fruit. The benefits are numerous! Watermelon isn’t just pretty or a favorite summer treat, it’s also very high in Vitamin C, a good source of Vitamin A because of it’s Beta Carotene and red watermelon is packed full of the antioxidant lycopene too!

Because of these nutrients, watermelon has been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease & strokes because it fights free radicals which will cause cholesterol to oxidize and stick to the lining of the blood vessels. It also lowers risk for colon cancer, where the free radicals will damage cell lining and cause cancer cells to grow. It also helps fight other cancers as well.

By helping the airways to relax, watermelon has a calming effect on asthma attacks as well, causing their severity to lessen. Watermelon is a good source of Vitamin B6, B1, Magnesium and Potassium, making it a good energy source as well.

Watermelon is an anti-inflammatory, helping to ease symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The Vitamin C and Beta Carotene get rid of the free radical molecules and help prevent damage. Increase in the vitamins found in watermelon have been shown to help protect against Macular Degeneration, decrease blood pressure, improve insulin sensitivity, decrease kidney stone risk and help prevent erectile dysfunction.

1 cup of watermelon contains 21% of the recommended daily value of vitamin C and 17% DVA of Vitamin A, through it’s rich Beta Carotene. For more information and some great recipe ideas, please visit my sources listed below.
