Lactose Free Milk is Not Lactose Free

There are more and more products available which claim to be suitable for people with an intollerance or allergy, however some of them can be misleading and even dangerous.

Some ten years ago I discovered that when I consumed cream it had a negative effect on my bowels it was so bad that I had to cut cream completely out of my diet. However the situation didn’t get much better, but I put up with it. Only since a few years ago I cut out all diary products and this made a significant difference. While working in a rehabilitation centre for youht one of my colleague’s was on a diary and wheat free diet. He described in detail what he went through when he ate the forbidden food items. Listening to him, I realised that I was suffering from the same symptoms and decided to follow the same diet. I also looked up information about irritable bowel syndrome on the Internet.

I like cooking and have been a chef, so I make a lot of food myself changing the recipes so I can eat them. I use diary free and wheat free products, like soya spread, spelt flour, buckwheat, rye flour, rice dream; (this is a liquid made from rice to make desserts and coco). Recently I bought a carton of lactose free milk. “So”, I said to myself, “lets give it a go”. I made some sauce with it to put to go with pasta. The next day I had diarrhoea. I did check the ingredients on the pack, it said that there was trace of lactose in the milk. I only have an intollerance so I thought it would be alright. Imagion if you are allergic! That could have been devastating So be aware if you see products in the shop like this. Because it is not always what it seems and your intollerance can be worse than you think.

  1. Thanks for this Snapper : )…I totally agree with you on this one : )

  2. Great and informative article, that should help me avoid food and drinks that have ‘free’ on their tags, great article agriculi!

  3. I agree! very informative article! Thanks for sharing

  4. wow, i never knew.

  5. Excellent article. I’m lactose intolerant and I remember when I discovered that many products have ‘hidden lactose’. This is namely in processed foods but bread is also a good source of hidden lactose, so is salami (I used to love salami). I’ve come to the conclusion that unless you wipe out all dairy, bread and processed foods, it’s very hard to avoid lactose. It’s even in my Clarityn allergy tablets!!!

  6. A very informative and helpful article. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Full of information and very important for the public to be informed of!!! Thanks for the share.

  8. Really nice informative article. You might want to correct your spelling errors however as there are quite a few and they do detract from your message which in this case I feel is important.

  9. I bake my own spelt bread, which obviously doesn’t have milk in it. I use water and olive oil. You just use the same recipe as normal yeastbread, however spelt doesn’t need as much time to rise as normal wheat. Some times I rise the dough in my car and bake it than in the oven.
