Macadamia Nuts

Diet for a healthy heart.

Dr. Amy E. Griel, recent Ph.D recipient in Nutritional Sciences, looked at Macadamia Nuts, which are currently included in the health claim for tree nuts.

As part of the research study, researchers had randomly assigned their participants to take either the Macadamia nut diet or the Standard American diet. They also provided the meals of the participants for five weeks. They made use of the controlled feeding study to compare a hearty-healthy diet with 1.5 ounces of Macadamia nuts to a standard American diet.

The Macadamia nut diet included Macadamia nut as snack, mixed into meals, as a salad topping and in cookies and muffins. The healthy diet with Macadamia nuts had 7%saturated fat, 18% monosaturated fat, and 5% polyunsaturated fat, while the American diet had 13% saturated fat, 11% monounsaturated fat, and 5% polyunsaturated fat.

It was found in the research that Macadamia nuts in a heart-healthy diet can reduce total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.
