Milk: Nature’s Nutritional Powerhouse
Milk is a real nutritional boost.
A glass of cow’s milk is a very powerful source of nourishment and there is a lot of myth and fashionable talk about it being bad for you because of the fat content.
Half a litre of milk per day gives you an average of one sixth of your daily energy requirements, all the calcium, a third of the protein and about a quarter of the vitamin A you need. It also provides one fifth of the vitamin B1 and half the B2.
Calcium builds bones and works with vitamin D to repair and strengthen them. Vitamin A helps with vision and keeping skin in good condition as well as various complex genetic things. Vitamin B1 and vitamin B2 help with the working and renewal of nerves and cells within the body.
However, there is no evidence that milk is indispensable, even for small children, as long as the rest of the diet is well-balanced.
So, what about the dangers of cholesterol? You might ask. Many nutritionists have warned about cholesterol which is a white, waxy substance contained in milk and other foods, which can sometimes build up in the arteries and cause heart disease. But half a litre of milk only contains around 0.05g of cholesterol, which is less than a quarter as much as one boiled egg.
Such a small amount, even when added to the cholesterol that the body itself manufactures, is very unlikely to cause anyone any harm.
So, milk is a fantastic powerhouse food which provides a major part of our daily requirements. What could easier first thing in the morning that giving your body a boost with a glass of milk.
