Salmonella is a type of food poisoning that is fairly common. It is caused by bacterium called salmonellae.
One gets crampy diarrhea and possibly vomiting and headache from this type of food poisoning. For people who have immune systems that don’t work well, usually people who have HIV/AIDS or are receiving chemotherapy for cancer, the salmonella may go away and come back in a matter of weeks as arthritis.
Salmonella can be a fatal illness.
You can usually get a case of salmonella by eating foods such as seafood, poultry, dairy products or eggs that haven’t been cooked thoroughly. Salmonella patients usually get their symptoms 12 to 72 hours after ingestion of contaminated food. Usually lasts from 4 to 7 days. Some will have diarrhea so bad that that they will be hospitalized to prevent dehydration.
Sometimes salmonella might spread to your bloodstream which can prove fatal if not treated promptly with antibiotics.
Salmonella can lead to a disease called Reiter’s syndrome. This disease will give you pain in the joints, irritated eyes, chronic arthritis and finally, painful urination. It can last from a few months to years and it canlead to chronic arthritis that doctors have a hard time treating. Even with antibiotics you can still get arthritis.
Never use raw meat and another food on the same cutting board or you can get salmonella. Also wash all utensils that touch raw meat with soap and water before using them for anything else.
