Snack Food Choices for the Lactose Intolerant
Recently, I received an email from a lady who wanted to know if I had any snack ideas for people who are lactose intolerant. I decided to write an article on this subject to answer her question so that it would not only benefit her, but countless others with her same question.
Keep the doctor away with fruit!
Fruit is the sometimes the easiest, most healthy snack choices you can reach for. If you’re on a tight budget, bananas, apples, pears, nectarines, peaches, plums, and oranges are extremely convenient to carry and very affordable fruit choices.
Are you craving carbs? Choose water-based breads.
Although fruit contains carbs, you may also want to get your carb fill through other snacking ideas. Choose a few graham crackers, some rice cakes, or a bagel. Jewish Rye, French and Italian breads are also great choices. Grab a handful of dry cereals without added milk solids to take with you to work. Pick up breads with oat, cornmeal, barley and other grains that are free of milk additives.
Vegetables are a great choice!
Whether you choose fresh, canned or frozen vegetables as long as no milk product has been added you can safely choose from a wide variety of choices. Make a small salad. Cut up some celery and carrots to bring with you for your mid afternoon snack cravings. Alternate between red or green peppers and dice them up as snack as well. A can of corn, beets or green beans can be another way to keep you from reaching for otherwise unhealthy food choices.
Soup can be a great in between way to satisfy your snack cravings.
Stay away from creamed based soups. Your tummy will thank you for soup choices that are made with vegetable, bouillon, meat or broth stock soups.
We all get sweet cravings from time to time.
When you need to avoid milk products you can still get your sweet fix by choosing gum drops, hard candy, licorice, fruit pie fillings, fruit popsicles, angel food cake, and jelly beans.
Other great snack ideas for the lactose intolerant
Choose tortilla chips and salsa, plain pretzels, and popcorn. Spread jam or jelly on your water-based breads. Put honey in your tea or coffee. Choose pepper, salt, herbs, spices, mustard and ketchup to add flavor to your food.

I’ve found that soy or rice drinks fill the desire for something smooth and creamy, or milk to go on cereal. I’m not sure how available it is nationally or internationally, but I can sometimes find at Walmart a soy-based Chai drink that is delicious and goes great with short-bread cookies. Short-bread does not contain milk, although it does contain wheat and egg.

I am not lactose intolerant, but I know someone who is. These are great snack choices for anyone as they are all healthy foods. Those berries look delicious. I think I will have that as a snack today myself.

Bless you, Liana! I only found out within the last few years that I am lactose intolerant, so I am still learning to adjust my eating habits. It’s hard giving up foods that I love, but I’m learning to adjust. Thanks again for the info!
