The Scrumptious Health Benefits of Scallops

Think you don’t like scallops? The light, non-fishy taste of scallops may change your mind. Plus, you’ll love the health benefits.

More people are discovering the health benefits of eating seafood. Not only is seafood low in fat and calories, but many types of fish are rich in omega-3 fatty – essential fatty acids with a multitude of health benefits. Some people shy away from eating seafood, believing that it has a “fishy” taste. If you’re not fond of the taste of fish, there’s still a type of seafood that may still appeal to you – scallops. Scallops are mollusks and have a light, non-fishy taste that can be enhanced by lightly sautéing or grilling them. Not only do they taste good, but they’re also good for you. What are the health benefits of scallops?

Scallops Help You Sleep Better

Scallops are rich in tryptophan, an amino acid that the body converts to serotonin. Serotonin is a brain neurotransmitter that’s important for sleep; and eating foods like scallops in the evening could make it easier to doze off. Add some carbohydrates with your scallops if you want to fall asleep faster since carbohydrates help trytophan reach the brain where it can make you sleepy.

They’re Heart Healthy

Scallops are a good source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Not only do they lower triglyceride levels, but they reduce the risk of blood clots that can lead to a heart attack or stroke – not to mention they have no saturated fat to clog the arteries. Omega-3’s, along with the potassium and magnesium found in scallops, help to keep blood pressure levels under control – another risk factor for heart disease.  Most people don’t get enough omega-3’s in their diet, but eating scallops twice a week can change that.

They’re Weight-Loss Friendly

At only thirty-one calories per ounce, most people won’t gain an ounce from eating scallops – as long as they’re not fried or covered with a rich sauce. If you’re on a lower calorie diet, scallops are an excellent source of protein and a good substitute for red meat.

They Help Maintain a Healthy Nervous System

Scallops are an excellent source of B12 – vitamin that’s critical for healthy nerve function. B12 deficiency can lead to serious neurological problems and Alzheimer-like symptoms which can be permanent if not treated. B12 is only found in animal products, so scallops are a good source for non-red meat eaters.
