Mustard is surprisingly low in calories. One teaspoon of yellow mustard has only three calories and no fat. It has the advantage over ketchup as most varieties have no added sugar whereas ketchup can be quite high in sugar and carbs. Mustard is the condiment of choice for anyone trying to watch their weight. Its full flavor can make even the simplest recipe or food more palatable.

It Has Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Most yellow mustard as well as many other varieties has tumeric added for flavor and color. Tumeric is a source for curcumin, a compound which has strong anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, curcumin is being studied for its role in reducing the risk of cancer, particularly breast, colon, and prostate.

Because curcumin has such strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it may reduce the joint pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Some studies also show it helps to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Curcumin is an up and coming spice in the scientific world and it’s a component found in many mustards.

Other Anti-Cancer Benefits

Mustard seeds are a member of the Brassica family of vegetables, a group that contains highly esteemed veggies such as broccoli and cabbage. These vegetables are renowned for their high quantity of glucosinolates, compounds that are believed to have strong anti-cancer properties.   1. I am so so happy to learn that mustard is from a plant and has anti-inflammiatory properties as I always apply it to my sandwiches when i have vegeburgers in sandwich with tomato sauce. A delicious and very enjoyable article. Thank you for posting it in and enhancing my knowledge. :) )

  2. Fantastic information, I always try to use mustard instead of mayo or ketchup, but a “BLT” with mustard is not my ideal sandwich.

  3. This is an excellent article and has pertinent information. Mustard is also found in foods like Wasabi, that hot pungent horseradish & mustard condiment served with Sushi & Sashimi. Mustard is a natural preservative. Ketchup & sauce manufacturers that make a high quality product with no preservatives also use mustard for its anti-oxidants because it keeps the color redder for longer, Mustard is widely manufactured in a “deheated” form used by many food manufacturers simply for its excellent healthy properties when heat & flavor are not required, for example in baby foods as a protein booster (mustard flour has 30% protein) when the vegetables have been overcooked! Mustard is also the only spice that had a naturally encapsulated flavor. This give it a long shelf life in dry form and only develops taste and flavor when mixed with liquid. I could go on & on about how good mustard is but there is not enough room here!!!
