Three Day Detox Program
A three day diet to detox and energize, using raw fruit and vegetables.
You may like to try this de-tox programme. Please note, only undertake this if you are physically able to do so. You should consult your doctor if you are in any doubt.
The purpose of a de-tox is to help your body clear itself of any toxins. And believe me we all have them no matter how careful we are. This is not only the type of foods we eat but takes into account the production of food in our society. Very few foodstuffs are produced without some chemical input, even to the wax used to make the apples look shiny, or the two sprays used on bananas, one to stop them ripening on the way here, one to start them ripening when they arrive.
We also take in toxins via the air and water and create our own with chemical reactions to stress such as muscle rigidity. Toxins have a tendency to make us feel slow and sluggish, or simply, just not quite 100%. You probably don’t feel ill at all but are not at your peak.
This is a three day de-tox programme which will help your body get rid of at least some of the effects of any toxins. Please note, you will probably suffer slight headaches, some flu-like symptoms, occasionally diarrhoea and you may feel irritable while your body fights off the toxins so be prepared. Do ensure you are as healthy as possible before you start. It is probably better to start on a day when you are not working away from home.
To enhance the effects, try to take a 20 minute walk every day. Drink loads of plain water, and every time you crave a snack, brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with mouthwash. Your mouth is going to feel furry anyway and it helps control cravings.
It couldn’t be easier – for three days eat nothing that is cooked. Cut out all tea, coffees, colas etc and drink only water, hot or cold, or fruit teas. You may have fruit juices you squeeze yourself – ALL shop bought variety have some sort of preservative added.
Eat raw fruit and vegetables. This does not mean a diet of lettuce leaves and carrots. In this day and age the variety available is tremendous. You can find baby sweet corn, avocados, broccoli, courgettes and sugar fat peas as well as more traditional carrots, cauliflower, cabbage and mushrooms. Yes I know these are probably not things you would normally eat raw but just try them; you’ll be surprised at how good they are.
However, instead of getting together a huge place of mixed fruit and vegetables I want you to try what is known as “intuitive eating”. Put simply, it is another way of extending your self-awareness: of allowing your body, in this case your palette, to decide what it needs at any particular moment. You start your meal by choosing one vegetable which appeals to you, say a broccoli spear. You then keep eating that type until if feels less appealing to your taste. This is your body indicating it has had enough of that particular item and you move on to another one, say slices of avocado.
You will be amazed at how different the same vegetable can taste after several slices. From being really tasty the same thing can very quickly become tasteless, even unpleasant when your body has had enough. If you mix varieties together it is impossible to tell when your body has had enough of that variety.
Do not eat only fruit; you must include vegetables to ensure the correct mix of nutrients. Add nuts to give protein and sprouting beans to really enhance the mineral elements. Sprouting beans have essential elements found no where else as well as being very tasty.
If you can keep this up for 3 days you will find your body responding in a very positive manner. You will feel lighter and much more energetic.
I don’t recommend it for longer than 3 days: frankly it is boring! At the end of three days you will be ready to cut an arm off for a plate of soup. However I do recommend that you introduce some raw foods into your diet regularly, something every day if possible.

i know it’s unlikely but any chance u can smoke during the detox? also, is this 3-day detox conducive to weight loss – I have heard some vegetables such as avacado and sweetcorn have high fat content
angel | Aug 2, 2008 | Reply
sorry I have been away ill so it has taken me a while to catch up. er no… smoking is a def no no – it is HUGE toxin and actively distroyed vitamins and minerals so there would be no point.
this is NOT a weight loss diet although on average people lose half a stone – and it also introduces you to a natural healthy diet which is bound to help you control your weight.
do remember that not all fat is BAD fat – avocado for example is wonderful for your skin and while it is high in fat, it is GOOD fat. your body does need some fat – what it does not need are sugars, chemicals and toxins.
cheers and thanks for looking in.

Hi Erica,
it isn’t a weight lose thing really more a preparation for taking up a healthy diet – there is no getting away from it – to keep the weight off you need to make permanent changes in your lifestyle but they don’t need to be arduous, just healthy. Most of you know only too well the yoyo of going up and down in weight. The New Year is a good time to be thinking about making healthy choices.

Jocelyn | Jan 2, 2009 | Reply
I am currently doing a 3 day detox and have done them before- I lost a few kilograms and didn’t put them back on because I gradually stopped the detox rather than go straight into eating processed, high sugar food. I’m also a dietician and anaemic so would say you can do a detox but have to make an effort to obtain iron from other sources such as green leafy vegetables, and also be extra careful regarding potential dizzyness you may experience. Good luck.

Hi Akisha – it will depend on how bad the anamia is – green leafy vegetables especially spinach and broccoli are very high in iron content and are best eaten raw – why not try cutting out bad foods and adding some fresh raw vegetables and see how you feel?
look at the labels of the dips and see what is in them – if you are desperate plain olive oil and basamic vinegar as a dressing might help but I prefer to leave that until I have done my dutiful 3 days and am onto a good healthy diet.
sorry – no dip
good luck

Hi, so you can eat the raw fruit and veggies all throughout the entire day?
hi Nicole, you can certainly eat raw veggies all through the day but remember not more than three pieces of fruit – because of the sugar content. The blessing of things like this is you can adapt them to yourself – some people stick to set meals (but you do need to eat every 2-3 hours), some snack on raw food all day, you will only know when you try it, which suits you best.
Thanks for your interest and good luck

angelstar | Jan 9, 2009 | Reply
hi B
yes UNSALTED peanuts are fine for protein, remember they are high in fat though so use your common sense in how much you eat, you can’t eat unlimited amounts. sprouting beans are actually better, they contain more nutrients as well as protein.

Hi Claire – vegetables lose a lot of nutrients in cooking although steaming is better than boiling. You could try it with cooked vegetables but the raw version is much more effective. At the very least it will increase your health.

My sister is the one that talked me in to doing this detox…I’m on day three, and I’m starting to feel much better. Yesterday, like you said, I felt flu like symptoms, and had a horrible headache. But today I feel like a new person. I’m excited to see how I feel tomorrow. Also, my sister said you are not suppose to chew gum or take tylenol, is this true?

Is there such thing as eating too many vegetables? I know you said to keep eating them until you’re full but I have quite an appetite! Can I actually reverse the detox program by eating too many fruits and vegetables? (even though it’d mostly be veggies because I’ve heard fruit has a lot of ‘natural’ sugar). I really want to try this! I started getting my body used to it today… so I wanna start tommorow! Thank you!!!

hi Kate, so glad you feel rejuvinated – I suppose to be strict your sister is right and you shouldn’t chew gum but I always think you need to adjust these things for yourself and if you feel better now…

I am really interested in this diet, but as far as eating nuts goes is there a preference? Can i eat plain almonds?or pecans? or just plain peanuts?
Sandy | Feb 5, 2009 | Reply
One way of making the detox diet less boring is to make a delicious green smoothie. It is all raw but very nutritious as all the cell walls of the green leaves and fruit are broken down to release all the vitamins and minerals. Its a whole food juice with all the fiber.
May not sound too good but any green leaves blended with some fruit takes all the green taste away. Very filling and very energizing.

hi Sandy – thanks for that – I’ve never been a great one for smoothies only because it is only too easy to get too much natural sugar from them but I will have a go with combining fruit and vegetable. I only know carrot and apple are good together, now time for me to learn some more. thanks again.

Hi Casey – remember this is only a three day diet for detoxing. but as far as the nuts are concerned there is no preference except that they are not salted ones. What you are looking for here is protein content which all nuts have.

angelstar | Feb 27, 2009 | Reply
Hi Julie, I am honestly not sure exactly how it will affect your medication. I suspect you might find it making you a bit sleepier than it usually does. It may well be that your body will consider the medication a toxin it needs to get rid of. Just be sensible and cautious okay?

Hi Angel, I’m trying this out and it’s Day One for me. I’ve been snacking on green apples, guavas and bananas and am going to go for vegetables for dinner tonight. But may I ask if taking in clear soup/consomme alright? Maybe vegetable base soup? Or should I just scrap it off??
angelstar | Mar 4, 2009 | Reply
hi aish zack
ideally you should not cook any of the vegetables during this time but I’m a firm believer in going with what feels right for you. Can I just warn you about taking too much fruit – it contains a lot of natural sugar which the body processes as glucose. Best not to have more than five a day while on this and three a day when you are having a normal healthy diet.
good luck

Hi Angel I am thinking of trying this once i get off from work (i work in the evening and get out by 7:30 AM) and take two days off, so would it do any harm if i stop after two days and maybe start again next week? also, i am iron-deficient but not quite anaemic, so should i stop taking my iron-sulfate supplementaries temporarily? also,i’ve heard that haem iron is much easier to absorb but it is found in red meat, so uhm how much iron-rich veggies do i have to take in to be able to match that amount? thanks so much for this great article, i’ll post back ASAP.
angelstar | Mar 7, 2009 | Reply
Hi Ella, thanks so much for commenting. I don’t think it matters how you do this one really – I’m a great believer in adapting things to suit the individual. You could take it one day at a time and it would still improve your health. Because of your anaemia it might be advisable to check with your Doctor about doing this. I suspect it depends on why you are anaemic, eg if it is an absorbtion problem etc. Yes you get iron from red meat but I have been a vegetarian for 30 years and have never suffered from anaemia – you ask about portions – http://www.fatfreekitchen.com/nutrition/food-nutrition.html – this is a good site for that.
be sensible and safe! I think continuing with your iron supplements would be fine especially if you say do one day a week.
good luck

I have been looking for a short detox diet like this one. Thanks so much. I have never participated in a blog/comment before but this one seems so helpful and supportive I couldn’t resist. I suffer from several emotional/mental health issues with recurring clinical depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and many anxiety issues. I am on medications (lots) and can’t not take them, but it seems to me that this plan is sound enough to work for me anyway. I got lots of useful info about 3-day detox from my aunt, she’s done it several times. She says to start with a laxative tea (only the one to get things moving)and for the three days eat raw greens even mixing them to make a salad(no dressing of course). And she says to mix any kind of berries cause they have fiber. And of course drink only and lots of water. I heard of any unsalted nuts being ok for a detox in moderation. Also i workout at a gym. Can i still do my workout but take it easy to stay on track? I would just like to get as much info as possible because it this is my first time and there plenty of detox methods. Just only this one really makes sense to me. thanks, Rick

I was thinking of starting one on a friday at dinner, through the weekend and finishing on monday at dinner. But someone at my work debated that it would be better to start on friday morning for breakfast and ending monday morning. Either way I work weekdays and off weekends. So I’d still have to work one day during my detox. Witch way is better or safer to?

without sounding like a bitch – NO WAY – decaff coffee is decaff because of the chemical processes it is put through to get like that – personally I am suspicious of anything that needs processing – I’d rather drink less ordinary coffee and stick to water or fruit/herb teas.

Ella and Lucinda – yes the three meals a day is a bit obsolete in dietary circles now – instead it is recommended one has smaller meals more often – say every three hours – this keeps the blood sugar level reasonably stable and cuts down cravings. When I feel hungry I drink some water first, quite often your body is actually telling you it is thirsty rather than hungry.

Hi Jasmine – try to buy organic fruit and veggie whenever possible otherwise make sure you wash or peel as appropriate. It is worth noting that soaking veggies and fruit IN water allows nutrients to leach out.

Hi Helen I would expect the headache but it sounds to me as if you are actually fighting some sort of infection if you have a sore throat and flushes – I think you should treat yourself as if you have a low grade fever – keep warm, take paracetamol and drink plenty and leave the detox until you feel well.

Hello, I have decided to give this a try. It seems like a good, short detox that at least allows you to eat (and healthily at that). Just one question: are we permitted to use spices/seasonings on our fruits and veggies? Namely, cinnamon, cayenne and black pepper, salt, garlic powder, etc? I was thinking of seasoning some of my veggies just a bit for variety. Also love cinnamon on bananas for variety. Thank you in advance for your reply!

Hi i love the sound of this detox and thinking of doing it, but wondering if i could incorporate a little dairy like low fat yogurt and cheese.

Osla I am so sorry I’ve been away and didn’t get back to your comment – it will be too late now I expect – but I recommend you look at your diet and start incorporating more healthy choice – eg try to eat at least one portion of your 5 a day as a raw vegetable.
thanks for commenting

Hi Geets – I would recommend you have small amounts throughout the day to keep your blood sugar level even – it is the big swings that cause the problems. so take plenty of raw veggies already sliced or diced that you can snack on. A banana is a particularly good fruit to eat during the day – don’t get hungry before you eat – try eating something every two hours.
you’ve probably finished by now – sorry I’ve been away.
but you might consider taking these with you on a regular basis.
best wishes Ann x

Hi Holly – I’m afraid not- all dairy products are mucous producing – that is they stimulate the lining of the gut to produce a mucous which slows you down. The idea here is to clear out your system of such things so taking ANY dairy would defeat the purpose.
best wishes
