Tropical Fruits That Grow in the Philippines

Tropical fruits are delicious and nutritious at the same time.

Fruits are favorite foods among children and grown ups. They are delicious and nutritious at the same time.

Filipinos are really fruit-loving people. Usually, for us, a meal is not complete without even just a banana or a mango shared among our family members.

We have grown a special liking for fruits because the Philippines is a tropical country. Our warm, moist weather is perfect for growing tropical fruits, such as bananas, mangoes, and pineapples. However, there are some fruits that grow in other colder countries such as the United States and Europe, such as apples, pears, lemons, and oranges. But the largest group is the tropical fruits that grow in the Philippines and other warm countries. The fruits from the Philippines are well known all over the world since they are sweeter and in better shape as compared to those produced in other countries.

The Philippine mango is one of the famous fruits from the Philippines.

There are 40 kinds of mangoes all over the world, but the ones from the Philippines are known to be the sweetest variety. Most of the mangoes in the Philippines are grown in Cebu an Zambales, but the sweetest ones come from the Guimaras Island.

Mangoes have big seeds. Farmers use these seeds to grow new mango plants. While almost all fruit plants can be grown from the seeds of the fruit, there are times when the farmers use other ways to grow fruit plants. For example, the pineapple can be grown by planting its green top on the ground. The green top can be removed from the fruit, and then planted back in the soil.

You may also notice that some fruits such as bananas have no seeds. If these plants have no seeds, how do they reproduce? Growing these special banana plants easily grow near the roots.

What about fruits which are full of seeds? How do we produce varieties which are seedless such as seedless watermelon and seedless grapes? Seedless watermelon plants come from special mutant varieties. Special stems called grafts are treated with special chemicals that will help the stem grow into whole new plants. The fruits from these mutant varieties are just as safe to eat as the ones grown the natural way. They are also just as nutritious.

Some plants that grow with seeds can be forced to make fruits that have no seeds. This is done by treating the flowers with special chemicals. Such chemicals force the flowers to produce seedless fruits. Seedless tomatoes are grown this way.

Meanwhile, seedless grapes are not really seedless when the fruits start growing. But as fruits grow bigger, the seeds slowly die and shrink until they completely disappear. Seedless grapes are grown in the same way as seedless watermelons, special grafts are specially treated to grow into new seedless grape vines.
