Vegetables are a Necessity for Good Health

Vegetables are good for your health.

In a typical workday we are constantly moving and using up our energy sources. Dark and green leafy vegetables have the best source of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to replenish that energy. It is very important to eat a balanced meal from the major food groups to get the best nourishment possible. Out of all the food groups, the vegetable group is the most important food group to consider for our daily meals.

Cabbage, broccoli, turnip greens, kale, and spinach are some of the best vegetables to have at your dinner table. These green vegetables contain plenty of minerals including calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamin B. Lettuce is usually the only green vegetable that is used more often than others, when green vegetables are one of the most inexpensive sources of very important nutrients. Each vegetable has a different nutritional property as well as medicinal value.

Everyone should make sure they get a sufficient amount of vegetables in their diet. It is widely known that vegetables help in the fight against cancer. They are full of antioxidants which protect against free radicals that damage cells, and therefore causing cancer. Fresh vegetables can be effective in detoxifying the body and preventing all sorts of problems, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Vegetables along with fruit contain a high amount of fiber. Your body makes better use of the vitamins in vegetables, because they metabolize in a more efficient way than taking vitamin supplements.

When buying green vegetables, you should make sure that they are a vibrant green color, and not yellowed from age. Buying seasonal vegetables will ensure that you are getting them fresh. Always wash your vegetables thoroughly after buying them, especially if they are green and leafy vegetables. Rinse your vegetables in salt water, then rinse in cool water a few times until they are free from chemical sprays, dust and sand. Use your vegetables early while they are fresh, because some of them have a short shelf life, and you will benefit from the health properties by eating them soon after buying them. If you need to store your vegetables, then place them in plastic wrapping or zip pouches, and they will preserve for a short period of time.

It is better to steam your vegetables to get all the nutrients and the fresh vegetable taste, because boiling will only release the valuable nutrients into the water. You can also cook vegetables in the microwave which preserves the nutrients in them. Vegetables can be served with creativity to give a pleasant look, a wonderful taste, and the ultimate health benefit.  Make vegetables a best friend to you and your family, and reap the rewards for a healthy life.
