What Causes Alzheimer’s Disease

Researchers suspect Alzheimer’s disease has three different links.

Researchers are looking at two broad types of Alzheimer’s disease.

One kind seems to be family-linked, passed on from parent to child. This kind of “early- onset” Alzheimer’s senility affects mostly members of the same family in their forties and fifties. It may involve a mutated gene, a damaged chemical messenger inherited by the child.

The other kind usually hits people over age 70. Scientists believe this kind of senility is not inherited. As many as half of the people over age 85 come down with this kind of Alzheimer’s disease, some statistics indicate.
