Meningitis is an inflammation of the membrane surrounding the spinal cord and brain. The inflammation can be caused when the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the spinal cord and brain becomes infected. There are several types of meningitis. Viral meningitis is the most common type. Bacterial meningitis is the most serious and requires immediate medical treatment in order to prevent long term permanent neurological damage and death.
