You can help a person who has stopped breathing or whose heart has stopped by giving emergency life support until professional help arrives. It can make the difference between life and death. CPR is effective in less than 30% of cases. This doesn’t mean that it is pointless. An emergency victim will probably be in the top end of the probability scale. Recovery rates for people already ill and in hospital is about half that and less than 5% for the elderly with other medical problems. So, even though there is a strong chance that the CPR will fail, if nothing is done the victim will have a 0% chance of survival.
