Help Your Child Cope with Mental Illness in The Family

First of all, these are suggestions only. I am not a counselor, psychologist or other licensed mental health practitioner. That being said, I am a mom who has been coping with a mental health issue in our family for over two years. Our two children, 11 and 15 when it started, are now beautiful, healthy, compassionate 14 and 17 year olds.

There is no guarantee about what we will be asked to face in our lives. Sometimes we will be blindsided by an issue that will rock our foundation. But it doesn’t have to destroy it. I believe that strength comes through trials, compassion comes through pain, and patience through endurance. Your children can come through difficult circumstances stronger, more compassionate and more patient.

Here are a few ideas on how to help them cope. These ideas were focused on young teens, but I’m sure they can be adapted to any age.
