Breakbone Fever Outbreaks in The United States (Part One)

Most Americans are unfamiliar with breakbone fever, a mosquito-borne disease also known as dengue fever. This disease has struck the United States in three recent outbreaks: Hawaii (2001), Texas (2005) and Florida (2009-2010). The disease may be severe in babies and children, and it may also threaten the life of an adult with diabetes or asthma. Medicine has developed no vaccine or specific treatment for dengue fever. New articles in "Emerging Infectious Diseases," a scientific journal published by the Center for Disease Control, scrutinize the flaws in how the recent U.S. outbreaks were handled by health authorities.
