Lyme disease (borreliosis) is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. The disease spreads through tick bites. Symptoms of Lyme disease include a circular red rash, fever, fatigue, depression and arthritic joint pain. As Lyme disease progresses, symptoms can become chronic and debilitating.
Lyme disease is a very serious illness. It can be difficult to identify and treat. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is helpful in treating chronic causes of Lyme disease.
Lyme disease has been known in Europe under various names since the late 19Th century. The Lyme name’s origin comes from the town of Lyme, in Connecticut, USA. In this town some children developed arthritis, which was originally thought to be rheumatoid arthritis, but investigations showed that this illness was caused by an infection transmitted from ticks.
