Tylenol produce cold symptoms relief products for children and infants so the voluntary recall of a number of products will no doubt cause alarm. However, the information released by the company who make the preparations are calming many fears as it seems there's nothing much wrong with them.

Only the medicines manufactured between April and June 2008 are to be recalled and then only certain lots. The voluntary recall is of medicines which all met “internal specifications”. The only problem with the Tylenol cold and flu liquid medicines under suspicion is that “an unused portion of one inactive ingredient did not meet all quality standards“. The company do not share which inactive ingredient they mean.

To see if the Tylenol Medicine you have in your drug cupboard should be returned Click Here for details.

Many of the products being recalled are “grape” and “bubblegum” flavored but we are unsure if the flavorings used are the suspect ingredient.

Comment

Cold and Flu Medicinal Preparations are a huge market and overly familiar in societies which have devalued the food they eat with over processing and making it nutritionally devoid of goodness. If parents paid more attention to the diets of their offspring and made them rich in fruits containing vitamin C they wouldn’t be buying cart loads of medicines. If parents taught their children rudimentary personal hygiene colds and flu would not spread so easily. Instead most parents treat their children to sweet flavored medicines at the slightest sign – albeit a sneeze in reaction to the room spray or deodorant they use.

Cough and Sneezes Spread Diseases

The answer to colds and flu is to stop it spreading and to close the stable door before the horse (in this case the germs produced when a person has a cold or flu) bolts. However, this attitude is unimportant in the face of all the money which is made from inventing new medicines and more appealing flavors. In different times attitudes have been more sensible:

Life is riddled with stress. Some of the complications of stress are poor health, heart attack, stroke, marital strain, increased conflicts in our relationships, lowered work production, and the list goes on. Stress is probably the single largest cause of absenteeism in the work force. While not all stress is bad stress, it is the purpose of this article to examine herbs and the ways we can use them to aid in the reduction of stress that causes harm.

Herbs have been used for hundreds of years for calming effects. They have been inhaled, bathed in, brewed, ingested, worn and viewed. Often times people have been known to drink alcohol to relieve stress, when alcohol is actually a depressant. Alcohol depletes the body of B and C vitamins and inhibits its use of calcium raising the risk of bone fractures – The Complete Book of Natural & Medicinal Cures. It also increases high blood pressure and the likelihood of insomnia. This is not referring to an occasional drink but to excessive and regular use of alcoholic beverages.

What are some of the better known herbs that can benefit mankind in bringing about a relaxed nature?

Passionflower – The five petals and five sepals of the flower have been told to represent the most faithful disciples of Christ. Rodale’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs. The early American Indians used the crushed leaves in a tea or a poultice. The tea would relax them and soothe their nerves. We have long employed its use for tension, fatigue, insomnia and even hyperactivity of children.

Chamomile or camomile – When I lived in the south Bronx I often drank chamomile tea after my karate practice to wind down as sparring would leave me feeling on edge. Soon my sensei was enjoying the drink as well. It’s gentle properties help to calm the digestive system and relieve the jittery feelings of an adrenalin rush. The sedative Apigenin is found in chamomile.

In Herbal Simples by Dr. W.T. Ferni, you can find written “No simple (herb)in the whole catalog of herbal medicines is possessed of a quality more friendly and beneficial to the intestines than Camomile flowers.”

Lavender – Some add it to a sachet under their pillow to induce relaxation, or their nightly bath water. Adding lemon balm or melissa helps to promote sound sleep according to Dr. Duke. If using essential oils first dilute them with a carrier oil before massaging and do not ingest them. Some lavender, such as Spanish lavender, will actually have the reverse effect, so be sure to ask first warns Dr. Duke. The calming lavender oil will slow the nerves and help to relax the body with a slightly anesthetic effect.

Catnip – Catnip is explored in Why Catnip is not just for Cats. We learn that catnip is able to calm and sedate humans (unlike what catnip does for cats). It has “mild tranquilizing-hypnotic-sedative effects on many people.” – Dr. Duke

Peppermint – Peppermint oil mixed with rubbing alcohol and rubbed on the temples is good by itself or particularly helpful with a blend of eucalyptus, lavender and rosemary and applied topically to relieve the head ache. A blend of peppermint and camomile tea is recommended before resting with a head ache to help relieve the head ache.

St. John’s Wort – This herb is a natural mood elevator but unfortunately is not recommended for those with hypertension. It has been tested on patients with depression and found to relieve anxiety, depression and feelings of worthlessness.

Licorice root – Dr. Duke stated “No plant in my data base has more antidepressants than licorice…” It contains at least eight MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitors, which are known to have strong antidepressant properties. However one who has hypertension must take this herb in moderation, and excessive use of the herb can cause hypertension. He cautions to limit intake to 3 cups of tea daily. Use of herbs containing MAO inhibitors should not coincide with the use of alcohol, smoked or pickled foods, cold or hay fever medications, amphetamines, tryptophan, tyrosine, or narcotics.

Spearmint leaf – Because spearmint is gentler it is recommended in tea for children to help settle the stomach or for head aches. The Practical Enclyopedia of Natural Healing by Mark Bricklin

Cinnamon – If your stomach is unsettled and causing lack of sleep, cinnamon may just do the trick. It contains catechins known to relieve nausea. Not only does cinnamon help to relieve indigestion but a study in Japan showed that it may also help prevent ulcers – The Complete Book of Natural and Medicinal Cures by the editors of Prevention

Ginger – Not only is the flavor uplifting, but ginger is known to improve moods and relieve depression and anxiety. Ginger also contains strong anti-inflammatory properties to help in relief of joint pain. The Many Health Benefits Provided by Ginger Root

Lemon Balm – In past centuries lemon balm was used as milder form of Valium. A quote from the British herbalist Nicholas Culpepper in regards to lemon balm “causeth the mind and heart to become merry,…and driveth away any troublesome cares and thoughts out of the mind…” The oils are both aromatic and anti-bacterial. It has been used for facials and drank as tea. Lemon balm attracts bees and according to Rodale’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs, lemonbalm or Melissa, which is latin for bees is the favorite herb of the bees because the scent helps them to get their bearings.

Eleuthero – This herb is also known as Siberian Ginseng and is known to help improve one’s sense of well being and assist in treatment of depression. This herb has been used in China and Japan for over 2000 years as a tonic for energy and vitality. It was used by Russian cosmonauts to help them adapt to different environments and to support their immune systems.

Rosemary – One of the things I love about rosemary is that it is versatile. Add it to your shampoo, lotion, bath water, make a tea out of it, add it to oil and massage it in. It will benefit you through your skin or your digestive system. The aroma is calming. Rosemary is beneficial to the central nervous system and improves blood flow to the brain and the head. Rosemary: The Herb to Remember

Vitamin B6 and B12 – Although these are not herbs, these vitamins are necessary to assist Neurotransmitters which aid in the communication of nerve cells needed to relieve depression. Dr. Duke recommends sunflower seeds, black beans, water cress and soybeans because they are excellent sources of these nutrients. “Without it the body cannot produce key neurotransmitters like tryptophan, dopamine, serotonin, taurine, norepinephrine, and histamine which have been shown to improve mood swings, improve our body’s communication system and increase our sense of well being.” What You Need to Know about Vitamin B-6

Melatonin – This is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland, a which is located in the center of our brains. It promotes the natural rhythms of our body which involve sleeping and wakefulness. Some of the substances that decrease our natural body’s production are alcohol, aspirin, caffeine, ibuprofen, nicotine, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and tranquilizers.

Purslane – Research has shown that a magnesium deficiency can contribute to tension head aches and Purslane is a leafy green found to be high in magnesium along with folate, lithium and calcium. – The Green Pharmacy by James A Duke, Ph.D

Kava or kava kava – This is a gift from the islands and has been used for thousands of years to aid in treatment of insomnia, anxiety, and stress. It does not cause drowsiness or poor concentration, but relieves pain and muscle tension and improves one’s emotional well being.

Valerian – While Valium can cause an addiction, this is a safe treatment for anxiety. It was used by ancient Greeks and Romans for everything from menstrual cramps to insomnia. After World War II it was used to treat shell shock With over 200 species available throughout the world there are many ailments being treated by this herb. Valerian has an effect on serotonin levels similar to antidepressant drugs such as Prozac without the many risks.

Please consult with your physician before taking any new supplement.

As with any supplement, it is always wise to first consult with your health care provider and bear in mind that taking something without your doctor’s approval can result in an undesired effect. Researching herbs and herbals remedies is done in the hopes of enhancing the medical care you are now receiving. Many herbs are safer and at least if not more effective than prescribed medication but this might not always be the case and sometimes the patient has been prescribed something that counteracts with the herb. Please take care and live a healthy life.

The study of medicinal plants by Paralaceus, the greatest European physician of the 15th century, gave rise to the belief that there is no plant on this earth that can't be used for the treatment of some disease, or other. Which herbal remedies can be used to treat insomnia and anxiety?

How would our ancestors have dealt with issues such as anxiety or insomnia (two conditions that often go hand in hand)? Essentially, they would have done the same as we do; they would have taken a sedative. Only theirs would have been in herbal form, not tablet. If you would like to know more about the history of medicinal plants, and how medicine has changed throughout history, please read my soon-to-be-published article: The Importance of Medicinal Plants and A Brief History of Pharmaceutical Medicine

Here are five herbs known to treat insomnia and anxiety, and to promote general relaxation:

Hops - Commonly used in the brewing of beer in Europe, this herb is cultivated for pharmaceutical purposes in Asia, America, Australian and central and southern Europe. Cultivation in Europe probably began in around the 7th century, in France. This herb is high in sedative and hypnotic properties, and it’s recommended, when administered as an aid to anxiety and insomnia, to be taken in an infusion, just before bed. Hops should be avoided by anyone suffering from a depressive illness. (And remember not to take Hops if you suffer from coeliac disease, or gluten allergy!

Source

Lavender - A popular herb with twenty-eight species in it’s genus, Lavender is widely known for it’s sedative properties. However, these are fairly mild which is why it’s commonly used in products for children and babies. Lavender is native to the Mediterranean area and India, but is grown all over the world. It can be administered by infusion, or used in the bath.

Source

St. John’s Wort – Another fairly well-known herb, used mainly to treat depression but also beneficial for anxiety, and sleep problems related to nervous conditions. This is widely available online and in health stores, but levels of the active ingredient vary from product to product, and it has to be taken for a period of around six months, with the dosage decreased gradually towards the end of treatment.

Source

Sweet Woodruff - Native to the tropics, this herb has antispasmodic and sedative properties, but is potentially dangerous because it has a narcotic effect when taken in larger quantities. Traditionally, it was used to treat nervous irritability, digestive disorders of a nervous origin, and insomnia. It is administered in an infusion which is taken in small amounts throughout the day.

Valerian – The root of this herb has been used medicinally since medieval times, and is a reliable sedative with a calm, stress-busting action. Folk medicine made use of it’s properties in in treating various neuroses, from pathological agitation accompanied by headaches, to palpitations and insomnia. Available as a tincture or extract, or you can make a tea by infusing and drinking before bed. Valerian is found in most prepared herbal remedies for insomnia, as is hops.

Eating hot chili peppers is a great way to stay healthy, naturally. Chili is a wonderful natural remedy, providing a huge number of health benefits, both treating and protecting from illness, disease, and various medical conditions.

I’ve always believed nature will provide a cure for everything, should we take the time to look hard enough. Here’s one of my favourite cooking ingredients, which happens to provide many benefits to general health, and act as a preventative to several dreadful illnesses and conditions.

Image via Wikipedia

Eating hot chili peppers regularly is a great way to stay healthy. It’s most helpful to eat your chili peppers whole, and as hot as you can take them. This is because the active substance contained in chili peppers, called capsaicin, is located mainly in the pips and pith (the part usually removed prior to cooking).

There may be many more benefits to eating chili than those I’ve listed below, but the effects of eating chili haven’t been thoroughly investigated. Here are the known benefits:

There's really no need to spend your hard-earned money on expensive and fiddly treatments for wart reomval...

…when all you need is a common potato!

Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus which, after treatment, remains in the cells causing re-infection at some later date. There are many products available for removing warts, some of which are expensive as well as fiddly – and possibly painful – to apply. They are not always effective. There are also many natural or alternative remedies, some of which are quite bizarre – but I can tell you from experience there’s one that really works!

Instructions For Wart Removal:

Simply take the potato, slice off a piece, and rub the wart with the inside of the potato slice.

Do this several times a day, or whenever you are able to, for two weeks. You can use the same potato several times – just slice it again before using, then wrap in cling-film and leave in the fridge until the next application. Replace the potato with a new one as soon as it begins to dry out.

The natural chemicals contained in potatoes will gradually kill the wart, turning it black in the process, and you’ll wake up one day to unexpectedly find it has vanished! Truly, I kid you not – this method cured my son’s wart in just a matter of days!

If the wart hasn’t been cured within one month of continued treatment you should see a physician or health professional.

Colour therapy is an ancient natural healing system used to treat physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.People have benefited from it's non-invasive treatment for thousands of years, and still do today.

Colour Therapy has been used for thousands of years, probably having it’s origins in either Egypt, India or China. Even today, the walls of certain rooms in establishments are painted with particular colours in order to create a certain atmosphere: pink is known to calm aggression so is often used in prison cells; green is calming and balancing and is known to promote a feeling of peace conducive to healing so is found in many hospital wards; classrooms are often painted yellow because it’s mentally stimulating and therefore perfect for a learning environment

Many years ago, Colour Therapy was given by means of the patient entering a temple with a small, singular window in the ceiling. This window would be filled with coloured glass and the patient would literally bathe in the coloured light for a given period of time. It’s been demonstrated in modern times that the colour blue can have a beneficial effect on high blood pressure, reducing it quickly and without the need for any drugs. Interestingly, the positive effect will last far longer if the blue treatment is followed up by an orange treatment – orange is the opposite colour on the colour wheel. This is true of all colours and the second (or opposite) colour used in a treatment is known as the complimentary colour.

Image via Wikipedia

So, how do colours affect our moods or physical well-being? Colour is vibrational and can be measured on a spectrum; some colours are visible to the naked eye but others are not, such as ultra-violet. (In this article we’re concentrating on those we can see.) Green, being in the centre of a rainbow, is also at the centre of the colour spectrum. It contains equal amounts of yellow and blue and is therefore a balancing colour. On one side of green are the warmer colours: yellow, orange and red and on the other side we have the cooler colours: blue, indigo and violet. Red is the most stimulating colour, providing lots of energy, and violet is the calmest and is associated with spiritual wisdom and the practice of meditation. Orange stimulates the digestive system so is great for dining rooms and restaurants, while blue is perfect for bedrooms, being a very peaceful colour and, therefore, helpful for sleep and relaxation.

Image via Wikipedia

There are many ways to bring the vibrational qualities of a particular colour into your life, and all without the need to visit an ancient temple: you can eat fresh, natural foods in the colour you feel you require (we often do this subconsciously, anyway) or you can wear clothes made from natural materials in the colour of your choice; painting your room or house a new colour can have a tremendous impact on how you’re feeling and many people use crystals – another natural source of colour – in their home or placed/worn on the body.

If you enjoyed reading about Colour Therapy please watch out for articles I’ll be writing soon, focusing on each colour in turn and discussing it’s properties and associations in far greater detail.

Dry eyes

Short sight

Image via Wikipedia

Ingredients

Dried Indian gooseberry pieces 5 or 10

One of the most popular alternative choices is the Asian practice of accupuncture. Patients allow the physician to insert needles at specific nerve locations in order to relieve pain. Patients return for repeat treatment periodically for long-term relief.

Iridology

An unusual method of diagnosis in alternative medicine, practitioners claim clues to the body’s condition are visible in the eye itself. An iridologist “reads” a patient’s iris to determine the presence of illness, poor health, or physical condition — many also prescribe holistic treatments or herbal remedies for conditions.

Ear Candles

With a surprising number of clinics and followers, the use of ear candles has gained popularity over the last few years. Patients seeking complete relief from ear wax clogs, a stuffy head, or blocked ear passages lie flat on their side as a special candle is inserted in their ear and lit. The heat supposedly “melts” the wax trapped inside and causes it to flow out. After a dual-side treatment, many patients claim that their sense of hearing, smell, and taste were improved by this waste-reduction technique.

Pressure Point Guides

Pressure point massages, especially those involving the foot, have moved from massage tables to do-it-yourself magazine articles as the method gains popularity. Using “pressure points” in one part of the body to influence another, practitioners claim the method can relieve pain, nausea, tension, fluid retention, and a host of other complaints.

Finding relief through unusual alternative practices intrigues many patients curious about treatments outside the norm. A little investigation and a trial visit may provide the solutions they seek.

Building our understanding of the health benefits and natural remedies found in our spices.

 Antioxidants: What Are They?

One gram, which equals approximately ½ teaspoon, of cloves contributes more dietary antioxidants than ½ cup of cranberries or blueberries, which are both known to be high in antioxidants. Knowing this indicates that adding cloves to our diet would be beneficial.

An antioxidant is any substance which reduces oxidative damage done to the body by oxygen. Antioxidants are also thought to reduce cancer risks and age related macular degeneration, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

The top ten antioxidant sources within dried herbs and spices are cloves, allspice, cinnamon, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, saffron, oregano, tarragon, and basil. The top fresh herbs would be oregano, sage, peppermint, thyme, lemon balm, and marjoram.

Oxidation: What Is It?

What is oxidation? It is seen in the process of fish becoming rancid, a slice of banana turning brown or a wound becoming sore and inflamed. Oxidation involves oxygen and cell change. Some of the cells become damaged and turn into free radicals. When the free radicals multiply they damage the bodies DNA creating a home for disease. The damaged cells become mutated growing abnormally and quickly. Two of the huge sources of free radicals are pollution and cigarette smoke. These radicals can set off a host of problems such as chronic diseases, Alzheimer’s, cancers, heart disease, and Parkinson’s.

One could improve his or her odds immeasurably by simply giving up smoking. Another beneficial step would be to get more antioxidants into their diet. Antioxidants can be found in foods, supplements, spices, herbs, oils, and beverages including teas.

Some of the spices and herbs not covered in the article “Spice Your Way to a Healthier Life” will be covered in this article, especially those proven to contain high levels of antioxidants or other health benefiting properties. It is best to remember to store herbs in airtight dark glass containers, and keep them cool. Heat, oxygen, and light will cause herbs to lose their potency. The best way to preserve their potency is to buy the herbal medicine within an alcohol tincture or glycerin extract, otherwise be prepared to use your herbs within a shorter time frame to maintain their full benefits.

Considering that plants have had to survive over the ages and continue to thrive despite pathogens and parasites, is it any wonder that many contain antibacterial properties? Many common flavorings were tested against 29 common food bourne bacteria and if they were not effective at killing the bacteria they at least inhibited the bacterial growth of more than half of bacteria they were tested against. There were 4 (garlic, onions, oregano, and allspice) that were effective on all 29.

 Spices or Herbs

Both are aromatic and natural products used to flavor foods and for a wide array of other uses. Spices are the dried seeds, buds, fruits, flower parts, or made up of the bark or root of the plant, and are typically grown in the tropics.

Herbs are the leaves and sometimes the flowers. Herbs are usually grown in climates similar to the Mediterranean.

 Allspice or All spice

Allspice is an aromatic stimulant containing agents that ease pain, expel gas, and stimulate and tone the stomach. Externally allspice is used in a plaster for rheumatism, neuralgia, and muscle pain. In Jamaica allspice is used in a hot tea for relief from colds, menstrual cramps and stomach upsets. In Cuba a refreshing tonic is made from allspice, and in Guatemala the berries are crushed and used topically on joint and muscle aches and bruises.

This food is low in Sodium, and very low in Cholesterol. It is a good source of iron, magnesium, potassium, and copper, and a very good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, calcium, and manganese.

 Bay Leaves

Medicinally bay leaves are steeped in a tea to aid in intestinal gas and bloating. Bay leaves have been prescribed for relief of arthritis because of its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Bay trees grow up to 6 feet tall and its boughs are used for holiday decorations. Some evidence also suggests that bay laurel also provides us with an antioxidant.

This food is very low in Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Folic Acid, and a very good source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, calcium, iron, and manganese.

 Caraway

Caraway seeds contain a volatile oil made up of carvone and limonene which are used to treat stomach problems and intestinal gas. It also contains a carminative property (assists in relieving gastrointestinal pain and the gas associated with it). Caraway, while being low in saturated fat, very low in sodium and cholesterol is a good source of protein, vitamin C, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, zinc, copper, and manganese. It is a very good source of dietary fiber, calcium, and iron.

Caraway seeds can be crushed and wrapped in a warm cloth and held against the ear to treat earaches. To cultivate the seeds, the plants need to be cut at ground level and then hung upside down in small bunches until dry. After drying the seeds can be shaken from the plants and stored in air tight containers.

 Cassia

Cassia is closely related to cinnamon and sometimes used as a substitute. In traditional Chinese medication Cassia is considered to be one of 50 fundamental herbs. A study published in 2003 in the Diabetes Care Journal reports individuals taking 6 grams of Cassia daily obtained the following results: serum glucose levels dropped 18 – 29 %, triglyceride levels 23 -30%, LDL cholesterol 7 – 27% and total cholesterol 12 – 26% over those participants who took placebos.

This is not suggesting that herbs or spices replace medical advice or prescription medication.

The USDA has three ongoing tests being conducted on Cassia’s effect of blood pressure levels, so we may be hearing more on this spice later.

In tests performed in Europe health agencies have reported that high levels of Cassia have been found to contain a toxic compound coumarin, which may be unsafe for consumption.

 Celery Seed

Known and used in ancient Rome and Greece and by Hippocrates in China and Japan. During ancient times it was used to treat liver and spleen ailments, colds digestion, influenza, arthritis, and water retention. Bear in mind, however, that celery seed should not be confused with the celery seed packets sold for planting. These have been chemically treated and are not safe for human consumption.

Also one needs to bear in mind that celery seed should not be taken by pregnant women, as it may cause contractions or uterine bleeding, nor should it be taken by people with active acute kidney inflammation or problems or those who are taking prescription drugs Furosemide, Aspirin, Warfarin, or Hydrochlorothiazide. It may be taken, however, in modest amounts to aid in kidney problems.

Celery seed has an extremely long list of remedies, some of which are anti-bacterial, antiseptic, anti-rheumatic, calminative (capable of tranquilizing or being used as a sedative), carminative, diuretic, hypotensive, stimulant, and tonic. It contains alpha-linoleic acid, beta-eudesmol, boron, calcium, chlorophyll, coumarins, flavonoids, iron, magnesium, zinc, phosphorous, vitamins A, B, and C and a host of others. For its size, it packs a heck of a punch.

 Chervil

We know that this spice has been around for awhile because a basket of chervil seeds was found buried with King Tut. It is one of the four commonly referred to as the “Fine Herbs”, which are chives, chervil, parsley and tarragon.

Medicinally it is used for its ability to lower blood pressure, provide relief for eczema, and act as a diuretic, expectorant, and stimulant. Nutritionally it is found to contain vitamin A, food folate, potassium, phosphorous, calcium, food energy, and other nutrients in smaller doses.

 Chili Powder

Chili peppers have been found to be useful as an expectorant, to boost immunity, kill ulcer causing bacteria, aid in weight loss and reduce blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Chili powder made from chili peppers is a very good source of vitamin A, dietary fiber, and vitamin C, and a good source of potassium and iron. Chili powder contains capsaicin which is a natural anti-inflammatory and has been proven to assist in the pain relief of shingles, head aches, tooth pain, arthritis and muscle aches. Chili peppers are also shown to contain salicylates, which are aspirin like chemicals.

 Chives

Containing high levels of vitamin C, vitamin A, essential minerals such as potassium, calcium and folic acid, chives are known to aid in digestion, stimulate appetite, and provide a mild antibiotic. Dried chives are an excellent source of vitamin A, potassium, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, phosphorous and Food energy.

 Cumin

Belonging to the same plant family as caraway, parsley, and dill; cumin has been found to stimulate the secretion of pancreatic enzymes which aid in digestion and the body’s ability to assimilate proper nutrients. In tests conducted in laboratories cumin seeds provided animals with protection against developing stomach and liver tumors. Cumin has a natural ability to scavenge for free radicals and work with enzymes in the liver to detoxify.

Molecular biologist Stephen Beckstrom-Sternberg PhD and James A. Duke PhD studied cumin finding 7 pain relieving properties, 3 of which are anti-inflammatory and 4 combat swelling. These properties make cumin an excellent choice for those suffering with carpal tunnel syndrome.

 Garlic

Garlic extract has been used for a host of ailments including ear aches, stomachaches, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, insomnia, nutritional energy. The Chinese used garlic to treat worms and other intestinal parasites over 5,000 years ago.

This fact caught the attention of microbiologist David Mirelman, of Israel’s Weizmann’s Institute of Science. After years of research he was able to trace the antibiotic activity of garlic to allicin. With his assistants, Meir Wilcheck, Talia Miron, and Aron Rabinkov the method of making large amounts of pure allicin was created.

Tests were conducted on mice using allicin, and those mice who consumed allicin, there was a 50% reduction in plaque found in their largest artery. Plaque, also known as atherosclerosis, is the major cause of heart disease.

The research also found allicin to be effective in killing or inhibiting the growth of fungi, bacteria, parasites, and protozoa. There is one drawback, however, the garlic needs to be consumed fresh to have its fullest impact. Cooking causes garlic to lose some of its potency.

Lemon Balm

Also known as Melissa officinalis, lemon balm has a long history of uses for both medical and aromatic properties. While the English were using lemon balm as an ingredient in furniture polish, the Arabs were using is to treat anxiety and depression. It is used widely in teas because of its enticing aroma, sedative properties, and its ability to sooth the digestive system. Because lemon balm has the ability to induce perspiration it has been used in healing teas to relieve fevers of cold and flu. It has also been shown to beneficial in relieving menstrual cramps, head aches and insomnia.

 Mace

Mace and nutmeg can only be cultivated in warm climates. Both are derived from the same evergreen tea which grows in tropical Southeast Asia and Australia. Nutmeg is from the actual seed of the fruit while Mace comes from the dried shell or arillus of the seed. Both are interchangeable in recipes; however mace is slightly more delicate in flavor.

Both their flavors and aromas have been beneficial in medicine. The spices are a major ingredient in many cough syrups, and in well known Coca Cola syrup. Like cloves, nutmeg oil has anesthetic properties and has been known to relieve tooth aches and muscle pains, when applied topically. The carminative properties of nutmeg and mace have been used for years to aid in digestion and stomach upsets. Both nutmeg and mace are known to contain myristicin, a substance which can cause drowsiness and aid in insomnia.

 Marjoram

This herb is used in seasoning meats, and sausages, preparing breads, and stuffing, or in

Salad dressings and pickling. Because of its excellent antioxidant properties, marjoram is a good herb to add to meat marinades.

As oil it balances and soothes. It has been used to relieve headaches, lower blood pressure, ease respiratory distress, and settle stomachs. Often confused with oregano, the aromatic herb marjoram, according to botanists, is an annual plant, while oregano is wild marjoram. The flavor or marjoram is sweeter and more delicate than that of oregano.

Marjoram is rich in calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamin C.

Mustard seeds

Mustard seeds contain some wonderful properties, such as plenty of phytonutrients, and then some special enzymes known as myrosinase enzymes with the ability to break apart glucosinolates into other phytonutrients. (Phytonutrients contain health protecting qualities.) These are called isothiocyanates. In laboratory tests the isothiocyanates have been found to inhibit the growth of existing cancer cells and protect against the formation of other such cells.

Mustard seeds are also a very good source of selenium and magnesium, which reduces the severity of asthma, decreases some of the symptoms of arthritis and aids in cancer prevention. Mustard seeds have also assisted in the lowering of high blood pressure, migraines, and difficulties of menopause, atherosclerosis, and diabetic heart attack.

Mustard seeds also contain tryptophan, omega-3 fatty acids, phosphorous, manganese, magnesium, fiber, iron, calcium, protein, vitamin B3, and zinc.

Mustard seeds, crushed and placed in a foot bath have been used to ward off the cold or flu.

 Oregano

Oregano is an excellent source of vitamin K, very good source of iron, manganese, and dietary fiber, and a good source of calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and omega-3 fatty acids. One tablespoon of oregano packs the same antioxidant punch as an entire apple; in fact oregano has 3 to 20 times more antioxidants than any other herb tested according to Shiow Y. Wang, PhD.

Two compounds found in oregano, Thymol, and carvachol have been proven to be strong antibacterial properties. A study conducted in Mexico found oregano was more effective against an amoeba than the prescription drug Tinidazol. Along with being a powerful antioxidant, effective against bacteria, oregano is loaded with phytonutrients.

Amoeba, which can also be spelled ameba, is Greek for changing. An amoeba can cause an infection in the bowels, which in turn creates diarrhea or abscesses in the liver.

 Parsley

One of the major health benefits of parsley is its ability to fight cancer. In studies performed on animals, parsley inhibited tumor growth, especially in the lungs. Parsley has the ability to neutralize certain carcinogens including those found in cigarette and charcoal smoke.

It makes a poultice for sprains, bruises, and insect bites. Taken orally parsley seeds steeped in tea can create a mild laxative which purifies the blood cleansing the body of harmful toxins. Parsley has properties which lower blood pressure, and assist in protecting the liver, spleen, gall bladder, bladder, kidneys, heart, and stomach. It has been used as expectorant and digestive aid.

It is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and folic acid, and also a source of iron, riboflavin, thiamine, potassium, and amino acids. Sprigs of parsley can be chewed to freshen the breath.

Peppermint

Speaking of breath fresheners – where would tooth paste be without peppermint?

Peppermint not only freshens the breath, but peppermint also whitens teeth. It has been used for centuries to aid in digestion, sooth hiccups and aid with flatulence. A drop of peppermint helps to clear the sinuses. Its antibacterial properties make it useful in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. Peppermint inhibits bacterial growth and fungus. It is also beneficial in relieving the itch of an insect bite.

A phytonutrients found in peppermint has found itself worthy of stopping pancreatic, mammary, and liver tumors in animals. This phytonutrient known as monoterpene is plentiful in peppermint. The animal based studies also demonstrated peppermint as being effective against cancer formation in the colon, skin, and lungs.

Peppermint is also found to be rich in nutrients such as manganese, vitamin C, vitamin A, antioxidants, and also found to be a good source of dietary fiber, folate, iron, magnesium, calcium, vitamin B2, omega-3 fatty acids, potassium and copper.

 Sea Salt

Natural sea salt, or reconstituted sea water contains 92 essential minerals, whereas table salt contains only 2 elements (Na and Cl). Of the 92 minerals found in sea salt, 24 have been found to be essential to maintaining health and life.

 Tarragon

Not only is tarragon packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, it is an excellent source of calcium, iron, manganese, potassium, riboflavin, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and magnesium. It contains 6 compounds known to lower high blood pressure, and is a very good source of niacin, and phosphorous.

Tarragon is also effective in normalizing the estrogen levels and aiding in the treatment of Amenorrhea.

Again I invite the reader to research further and adapt the use of spices and herbs to his or her own liking. Mother Nature has a lot to offer, and it would be a shame to not take advantage of what we are given. George Mateljan has created an online site providing nutritional information and recipes for the public free of charge, called The Worlds Healthiest Foods. The Worldwide Gourmet offers another. The internet allows access to a wide array of information. Happy and healthy eating should be yours.

Personal program of proper diet and positive thinking that helped me through my sickness.

I used to be very, very sick. I was born with Cerebral Palsy and used to be in a wheelchair after contracting Encephalitis. I had to fight to gain a bit of health back. After seven years of being in the wheelchair, I can now walk. Why? Because of these basic 10 reasons below. Apply these things and love for others and above love for your Creator, and see if it can work some positive benefits in your life also.

I then started to do my own research on different remedies that work for trying to maintain good health habits and how we can benefit our minds, bodies and spirituality. These simple things can make life worth living. Try them and see if they work for you also.

Drink a lot of water. Not just 8 glasses but 12 glasses of water a day. It flushes the toxins out of the body that can make pain worse then it needs to be. Water is the life of the body, without it the body suffers, gets sick and can even cause depression. So drink, drink, drink.

Do some research on cutting out coffee, soda and only drink wine if you feel like drinking. A glass of wine a few times a week is good for the heart and good for cleaning the blood. Stop those sweets like sugar, and cakes and candies. Of course though, dark, dark chocolate is good for you, so if you desire sweets, eat some dark chocolate, the darker the better for you. Dark chocolate is good for the heart, and at the same time satisfies the sweet tooth. Dark Chocolate needs to have a lot of cocoa to be of benefit to the body. It is the cocoa phenols that lower blood pressure. Dark chocolate also can serve as a antioxident. So friends, eat your dark chocolate every day!

Purchase some cream called “Capsaicin Cream.” It will help with the aches and pain. Rub some on the parts that truly hurt. I know the FMS suffers also suffer from muscle and tendon pains. An all over ache. I having Cerebral palsy myself suffer from muscle aches and pains, so I definitely understand pain.

Eat as much veggies and fruit as possible. when waste products are eliminated the body can better work the way it should. Waste products can cause health problems if not eliminated properly every day. Next time you eliminate waste material, look at it, is it shaped in an S shape. If not, that means you need more fiber. Eat your veggies and your fruits. You will feel better if you do. Do research on a product called “Natural Joint.” It is great. It is made up of 37 different kinds of fruits and veggies and is all natural. It is good for us who just don’t have the time or want to eat all those fruits and veggies we are suppose to. It is good for joints, muscles and will help with some of the pain. I do have spastic Cerebral Palsy and at 33 years old I used to feel about 50 because of the spastic contraction of the muscles and tendons in my arms and legs. Sticking with these basic things have helped me feel better.

Do research on a product called “Natural Joint.” This product is fantastic. It is made up of 37 different kinds of fruits and veggies and is all natural. It is good for us who just don’t have the time or want to eat all those fruits and veggies we are suppose to. It is good for joints, muscles and will help with some of the pain FMS produces.

Take time out for yourself each day. Soak in a hot bubble bath with soft music. They say music can calm the wild beast, then just think of what it can do for us humans! Walk each day at least one mile and work up to 3-5 miles. Do it slowly though at first but movement sometimes helps to get the body going again.

Apple Cider Vinegar. Now don’t laugh but if and when you enjoy salad. Use “Braggs” apple cider vinegar. Good stuff if you put two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in an 8 ounce glass of apple juice. This allows one to drink it without the bad taste. It really taste to me as apple cider does. Or you can place it in water and drink it. I also sometimes just place it in my salads.

We all need spiritual guidance and this helps us to have a clear mind to function each day. Talking with our Creator allows us to vent our feeling about our health issues, economic issues or whatever problems we have. After all speaking to our Creator is free, unlike those counselors who charge absorbent amounts of money. Try it, you might like it and it’s great for lifting the spirits.

Visit others who are sick, you might find someone who is suffering more then you and that should make you appreciate that you are not so bad off after all. Try to share a cute joke or a funny story, make them laugh. Laughter is great for healing. Sometimes when I feel down I rent some funny movies to make me laugh and after I feel so much better.

Keep a journal on your feelings each day. You will notice that after the first two weeks if you follow these simple suggestions, you will feel better and you outlook on life will be brighter. Your whole appearance will shine and when others see your great benefits, then they too will follow these basic steps for benefiting their own health. Yes, who knows what a bit of proper eating, plenty of water, sunshine and laughter but most of all a positive attitude and a relationship with the one who Created our wonderful bodies to repair themselves, if we only treat it as a precious vessel for life.

I hope some of this helps you, it has helped me to come up out of a wheelchair and from major health problems to a productive mother and helpful citizen in my community. Try it, it can’t hurt and if it helps you the way it did me, you will benefit yourself and others. Remember too that laughter is good for the mind and body.

Having a positive attitude and helping others is also good for us. It cheers others up and sometimes make us realize that we are not so bad, there is always others worse off. Most of all remember that God can do what no one else can, not even doctors.
