Cigarette smoking kills 443,000 people every year and is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Second-hand smoke is also responsible for introducing toxic chemicals that cause cancer and heart attacks into anyone who is exposed to second-hand smoke. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that 19.8 percent of the U.S. adult population smokes cigarettes.
