This article covers some tips to help you get back on track and tone up after eating an excessive Thanksgiving feast.

Thanksgiving is one of those days where you know you are not going to be able to stick to your diet. The temptation is just too strong when everyone else is stuffing themselves silly and the spread of food is so delicious. It’s okay to indulge once in a while, so don’t fret about one day of excessive eating. Just follow these tips for damage control:

1. Stuff yourself with healthy foods. Thanksgiving feasts don’t have to be as fattening as you might think. Eat lots of turkey, a source of lean protein. Serve up some sweet potatoes along with roasted vegetables such as beans and squash. Avoid gravy, cheese, potatoes and other foods with lots of carbs and calories.

2. Get active after your meal. You may feel sluggish, but the best way to speed up digestion, metabolism and bounce back from a huge meal is to move around a bit. Go for a walk or play a little touch football with friends and family.

3. Resume your regular diet and exercise routine the next day. One day of indulgence is fine, but it can lead to a streak of laziness if you aren’t careful. Get at least 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise each day over Thanksgiving weekend to help propel yourself into the next week. This will get your mind and body back on track.

4. Don’t be afraid to mix in a little strength training with your cardio workouts. Calisthenics such as push-ups and sit-ups help you build lean muscle. If you didn’t already know, lean muscle burns off calories faster and more efficiently than regular tissue or fat. Combining aerobics such as jogging with a some light strengh exercises is the perfect approach for toning up after the holidays.
