The American Red Cross, which supplies approximately one-half of all the blood products in the United States, reports that only five percent of the eligible population gives blood, though it is estimated that nearly 95 percent of Americans will need blood or a blood product sometime during their lifetime. So where will blood banks find voluntary donors to meet the ever increasing need for blood?
If blood collection agencies are to continue meeting the demand for a safe and adequate blood supply, one possible demographic to target is young people aged 15 – 30 years old, who could supply blood for years to come if they became regular donors.
