Top 10 Health Concerns for Children – 2010
A recent research was done by University of Michigan, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health on health concern for children. The results are quite alarming as the major health concerns for children are childhood obesity, drug abuse, smoking, bullying, teen pregnancy, and much more.
Parenthood is joy; do you agree with me? With this joy comes the responsibility of developing a healthy child and teaching values. A recent research on top 10 health concerns for children is really alarming. There lies bigger responsibilities for today’s parents; parenting is not just spending time with kids or teaching financial responsibility anymore. Let us take a look at the top 10 health concerns for children.
This research was done by the University of Michigan, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health. A poll was taken on May, 2010 to rate the top 20 health concerns for children and 2,064 adults participated in this poll.
1. Childhood obesity tops the list with 38% voting it as the biggest health concerns for children. In the last 25 years, the rate of childhood obesity has tripled. This may even increase the risk of heart diseases and diabetics. I think it is time parents develop healthy eating habits among children. You may find out whether your child is obese or not by measuring the neck circumference.

2. Drug abuse is the next biggest health concern with 30% votes. Since 2007, drug abuse is in the second position in health concerns among children. The rate of illegal drug abuse is declining; however, abuse of prescription medications remains high. Some common drug abuse among children and teen are alcohol and marijuana. This health concern may lead to depression, anxiety and various other mental health issues.
3. Smoking is voted as another health concern for children by 29% of the voters. In the year 2007, smoking took the first position in health concerns and has now come down to third position. The survey said that nearly 4.5 million of the adolescents in the US smoke. Cigarette smoking may lead to health issues like respiratory diseases, problems with the lung, etc.
4. Internet safety is voted as a health concern by 25% of the voters. This may come as a surprise as many may have the question of how internet safety is a health concern for children. With the advent of the Internet, more and more children are using it and are becoming addicted to the Internet. I totally agree that children can learn a lot if Internet is used wisely, but on the other hand problems like identity theft and cyber-bullying are also increasing. Parents can utilize the privacy settings and can safeguard their children.
