On Sunday, July 12th, TLC will be premiering a documentary called “The 650-pound Virgin.” The surprising story of David Smith, a 32 year old man who battled with obesity throughout his entire life, and finally after losing more than 400 pounds in only 26 months, Smith was able to turn his life around. He was an enormously obese guy who attempted to end his life many times. At 650 pounds, Smith had given up hope on himself and his life. Without having bypass surgery, Smith transformed himself from a loner to a hunk. In 2003, Smith faced his biggest fear. He felt that there was still hope for him to start a new life. He had to lose weight. “I decided that the best way to lose weight was to destroy it,” and the best way to be seen was on television,” he wrote. And he did take action. Smith contacted KTVK, a local television station that hosted fitness and nutrition guru Chris Powell.
After several weeks, Powell contacted Smith. After looking at some of his pictures, Powell was curious to meet this man and wondered how he could be so large. At the time, Smith couldn’t fit in a car. After meeting Smith, he placed him in a rigid diet. Not wanting to tell Smith that he couldn’t eat junk food again, he told him that he would diet strictly one day and then reward him the next. “It was baby steps,” the trainer explained. By 2007, Smith lost 410 pounds from a starting weight of 650 pounds.
At the age of seven, Smith was sexually molested by his best friend. Unable to deal with the experience, he began eating as a way to escape his problems. He was bullied by other kids and made fun off. It got to the point that he had no friends and started to hate people. Although the physical abuse stopped, the emotional abuse continued. Smith dropped out of highschool at the age of 17. He also had to cope with his mother’s death as well.
Asked after the show when he thinks that could happen, he said, “I’m just putting the pieces together — and hopefully a girl will be one of the pieces.”
