Calculating Your Bmi
How to calculate your BMI.
Calculating your BMI allows you to see how your weight compares with your height. There are 5 BMI categories; underweight, normal, overweight, obease and morbidly obease. Very muscular individuals should not use this method as muscle weighs more than fat. Pregnant women shouldn’t do this either.
To work out your BMI:
- Work out your weight in pounds and your height in inches.
- Take your weight, in pounds, and multiply by 703.
- Take this number and divide by your height, in inches.
- Take the result of this and divide by your height in inches again.
- You’ll be left with a number. Compare this result to the chart below.
BMI Results Chart
Less than 18.5 – Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 – Normal weight
25- 29.5 - Overweight
30 – 39.5 – Obease
40 or more - Morbidly Obease
People with a BMI over 25 should consider losing weight to avoid health problems. For diet tips see here.
