Calculating Your Bmi

How to calculate your BMI.

Calculating your BMI allows you to see how your weight compares with your height. There are 5 BMI categories; underweight, normal, overweight, obease and morbidly obease. Very muscular individuals should not use this method as muscle weighs more than fat. Pregnant women shouldn’t do this either.

To work out your BMI:

  1. Work out your weight in pounds and your height in inches.
  2. Take your weight, in pounds, and multiply by 703.
  3. Take this number and divide by your height, in inches.
  4. Take the result of this and divide by your height in inches again.
  5. You’ll be left with a number. Compare this result to the chart below.

BMI Results Chart

Less than 18.5 – Underweight

18.5 – 24.9 – Normal weight

25- 29.5 - Overweight

30 – 39.5 – Obease

40 or more - Morbidly Obease

People with a BMI over 25 should consider losing weight to avoid health problems. For diet tips see here.
