Dieting Without Exercise Doesn’t Lead to Weight Loss

The recipe for healthy and permanent weight loss is very simple – dieting and exercise.

Weight loss has become an obsession for millions of people. Well, maybe not exactly those millions, who are seriously overweight or obese, but it is a fact that many people have turned into professional dieters.

Nowadays there are a lot of weight loss pills, weight loss supplements, weight loss diets, et. that people frequently forget the basics – if you mind what you eat and if you are active, then you will be in top shape and you wouldn’t have to think about weight loss at all.

No Madam, There Is no Magic Wand for Weight Loss

The weight loss industry skillfully exploits the desire of dieters to lose weight fast and without any effort. You take a weight loss pill and your body becomes slimmer than that of a top model. While there is no doubt that there are weight loss pills, which are very effective in the fight with excessive weight, this is usually not the best (and certainly hardly the healthiest) way to permanent weight loss.

It would be so good if there were a magic wand for weight loss. But there isn’t. Weight loss requires efforts. Weight loss requires a balanced diet and a lot of exercise. While for many people it is easier to keep to a very restrictive diet, than to exercise just a bit, this makes no sense to at all. Restrictive diets could help shred a pound or two but after you get back to your normal eating regime, you will gain more weight than you have lost.

Why Dieting Without Exercise Doesn’t Help to Lose Weight

It is not fair to say that people don’t exercise because they are lazy. Well, maybe for many dieters this is exactly so but this doesn’t apply to everybody. Sometimes a dieter is so exhausted (by malnutrition or by his or her daily chores) that hitting the gym for an hour or so is unthinkable.

However, when diet is not accompanied with exercise, this leads to nowhere. Fats are not burned when you eat next to nothing. Fats are burned when you sweat them out in the gym.

When you diet, you lose weight because you lose muscles. Your muscles melt out but the fat stays. This is obviously not what your weight loss dream is about, right? If you want to lose weight permanently and above all – to lose fat permanently – there is only one way to do it: eat moderately and exercise actively.

Well, this doesn’t sound as easy as taking a handful of weight loss pills, but this is the only way to lose weight and keep the score in the long run. Yes, a magic wand would have been easier but since for now there is no such thing, if you want to lose weight permanently, the only way is to keep a balanced diet and exercise a lot.

  1. I disagree. You can lose weight faster if you exercise, but you can lose weight by eating a daily caloric deficit and living your normal life. The weight loss will be slow, sure, but it still happens.

  2. Yes, this is also true but for many people “normal life” is 8 hours of sleep, 14 hours in front of the computer and the rest of the day is spent eating junk food in front of TV. :) Actually, if we led the normal life our greatgrandparents had, we wouldn’t be discussing how to lose 50 in order to become only 250 pounds. :)
