Do You Own Your Scale – OR – Does Your Scale Own You?
Do you own your scale – or does your scale own YOU? Here’s how to break the scale addiction!
Do you own your scale – or does your scale own you?
The first step on the road to recover is to admit one has a problem!
Being a woman AND an ex-athlete, I can finally admit – if shamefully – that I am a full-blown bathroom scale addict in recovery! It was my Master and I bowed to it – several times a day - if only to better watch it settle on a number! If it didn’t quite rule my day – it certainly affected it!
Now, many years later – I control it – although, like any addiction, it’s a day to day battle!
I know I am not alone! Women in particular, can buckle under the real and perceived social pressure, scrutiny, and expectation to to be of a certain size. They accept and conform to some magic number on the weight scale that for most – is completely unrealistic and totally unattainable!
Yet – how many of us step on that dreaded scale first thing in the morning to see if we’ve lost that precious pound? Or ounce? Or micro-gram?
And, how many return for more self-abuse by hopping on right before bed, as well?
You know who I’m talking to!
The bathroom weigh scale holds a mysterious, unfathomable power over us that no other household appliance or gadget ever can – other than the almighty television! It beguiles, mesmerises, invites, and tempts. It sings a siren’s song that we find utterly irresistible and keeps us vulnerable to it’s harmful effects!
Here are a few ways you can break the harmful cycle of scale addiction:
- Scale Back: It’s time to put your full weight behind the commitment to get rid of this negativity in your life! Remember – you are much bigger than it is!
- Weigh Options: The dreaded scale is not the only way to know if you are at a healthy body weight – there is always ‘the favorite pair of jeans system’ as well! This method is far kinder and gentler in it’s delivery system! The ‘eyeball method’ can be very, um, enlightening – as well!
- Measure the Pros and Cons: Do the people who love you really need to suffer because you may have gained half an ounce?
And Finally…
- Balance Priorities: Always remember that there are far weightier issues to deal with!

I’m a once a day gal and I have 1.1 kg to lose as soon as I can. No pressure mind you, my daily texts to my sister show she is in an even worse predicament.

That’s a weight off my shoulders
I don’t use scales – if bits start to wobble that didn’t before then I know it’s time to do something about it.
