Does Bread Make You Fat?

Does eating bread make you gain weight? Here’s what you should know about bread if you are trying to diet.

When many people go on a diet, they choose to give up bread. Low-carb diets work by removing bread and other foods which are high in complex carbohydrates from your diet. It is important to consider whether or not bread is really the culprit behind your weight gain. Here are some factors to consider if you’re trying to determine whether bread makes you fat or not.

What Type of Bread Are You Eating?

If you’re eating white bread, it is more likely to pack on the pounds over time. The reason is because white bread is higher in calories and carbohydrates than other types of bread. This is why it is a good idea to consider switching to whole grain or whole wheat bread, which is lower in calories and carbs, as well as higher in fiber and other essential nutrients. Pumpernickel bread is also considered to be healthier than white bread.

What Are You Eating on the Bread?

What often leads to weight gain is what you eat on your bread. Meats and cheeses which are high in fat can cause you to gain weight when eaten excessively. Eating lean meats, such as turkey or chicken, and using low-fat or fat-free cheese is ideal when eating a sandwich. Always use lettuce and tomato when making a sandwich. Skip the mayonnaise or ranch dressing and opt for mustard or Italian dressing instead. Butter is also less healthy than olive oil spread if you are eating bread with eggs.

What are the Alternatives to Eating Bread?

There are a number of different alternatives that you can choose if you want to enjoy a sandwich, but also want to avoid the calories and carbohydrates in bread. Wraps and pita bread are two very healthy alternatives. Using whole grain or wheat varieties of these instead of white varieties will also make eating a sandwich healthier for you. Also think about eating only half of a sandwich with a bowl of soup or yogurt instead of the whole entire sandwich.

When eaten excessively, bread can cause you to pack on the pounds. It is ideal to only enjoy any food that you like in moderation, or you may experience some type of weight gain. However, if you enjoy eating bread, it is a bad idea to eliminate it from your diet completely. You are going to be more likely to want to eat it again and may overindulge in the future. Reducing how often you eat it, how much you eat of it, the type of bread you eat, and choosing healthy alternatives to bread can be the way to go for dieters.
