Get Up and Move
A follow up to my article “The Dieting Fallacy”. Now that you’ve kicked that nasty dieting habit you can make some real progress in losing weight.
So you finally told Steve where to shove his one-size fits all, lose weight in six minutes, magic diet right up his ass. But now you’re stuck for what to do so you say:
“Alright, Carl, alright. If you’re such a smarty-pants then how can I get in shape, huh? How can I get healthy and thin? Go on. You tell me what I can do if dieting is a fakey-fake fad.” And I guess that’s only fair.
First of all, I’m glad you accept that dieting is a fakey fake fad. Never ever go on a diet. But since you’re so keen let’s talk about something real. Let’s talk about changing your diet. You see the difference? There’s “going on a diet” and there’s “changing your diet”. That essentially means you’re going to change your eating habits for the long term. So let’s talk about food for a second.
First of all there is no magic food you can eat. There’s no super amazing answer to what foods you can and can not eat. You need to choose the right diet for you. A general idea though is to go for things with a low GI (Glycemic index) because this is the kind of fuel that lasts longer. That means you wont need to eat as often and you can keep going strong without needing to stop and refuel.
“Well come on, Carl. Cough it up! What’s got low GI?” Oh boy, I have to do everything don’t I. The answer is simple and healthy. Go for fruits, vegitables, the bread where you can see the grain, pasta are another good choice. Milk is another option if you need something liquid but don’t forget water. We’ll come to that a bit later. So make sure these sorts of things make up the bulk of your diet.
Remember this is just a general rule and if you eat these things like there’s no tomorrow then you’re still going to get fat from them. Low GI is a good starting point but what you need to consider most is your lifestyle and your goals. That brings us to what is really important.
Your exercise. The key to losing weight is moving around a lot more than you’re eating. You can chow down on fruit and vegitables until the cows come home and still get obese if you’re just sitting there doing nothing. On the other hand you can wake up every morning and enjoy a nice big hamburger if you’re a marathon runner. I’m not having you on here. This is the secret to your health success. Get up and move!
