Losing weight is important to people. Many people find ways to lose weight. There are many diets that promise weight loss. Unfortunately, there are also fad diets that promise you fast results. I have been a victim of trying fad diets only to find out that they don’t last. Marketers try to reel people in with promises of fast weight loss results by selling fad diets. While I was researching fad diets, I found ways to spot fad diets. Here are some was on how to spot fad diets.
Lose Weight Quickly
Any diet that tells you that you can lose more than one or two pounds a week is a fad diet. It took time to put the weight on so it will take time to take the weight off. If you lose weight too fast, you will most likely gain the weight back plus more weight as soon as you finish the diet.
Lose Weight Without Giving Up Junk Food/Exercising
Any diet that promises you that you can lose weight and keep it off without giving up junk food or exercising is a fad diet. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. You must exercise to lose weight. You also can’t keep eating junk food and expect to lose weight.
Before and After Shots
Have you noticed when you see weight loss advertisements, there are always before and after shots used? This is also a fad diet. The marketers are clearly placing a heavier person’s face on a smaller person’s body. The people in the before and after shots also never look like the same person. Even if they do look like the before and after shot, Photoshop makes it possible to deceive the public.
Testimonials About The Diet
Beware of diets that offer testimonials from clients or experts in weight loss. They are being paid to tell us that their product works. They will deceive anyone for the right price. We also don’t know if the people making the testimonials even used the diets, pills, etc. that they are promoting.
Limit Food Choices
Beware of diets that limit your food choices and don’t encourage you to get balanced nutrition by eating a variety of foods. I tried a cabbage soup diet that was like this. You only ate certain foods a day in addition to that soup. An example of what you had to eat was bananas and skim milk all day. I can tell you it was not pretty. I didn’t know it was a fad diet at the time. I do know I will never try it again.
Spend A lot Of Money
Watch out for diets that require you to spend a lot of money on pills or pre-packaged meals in order for the diet to work. You shouldn’t have to go broke in order for the diet to work. I just saw a commercial for a diet that sends foods to your house. The company will send you food seven days a week. They try to entice you by telling you that you can eat the foods you love and still lose weight. They don’t tell you that fruits and vegetables are not included in the package. In addition to spending the money on the pre-packaged food, you have to spend it on the fruits and vegetables that you have to eat.
These are all of the tips I have on how to spot fad diets. Good luck to everyone losing weight and I hope you can spot fad diets.

I agree, the best way to lose weight, is to change the way you eat daily, avoid junk, fad diets, and pills.

Very nice tips! I agree that we shouldn’t be easily fall to that “before – after ” commercial. With the technology right now, even a fat woman could become slim and sexy on a picture.

I agree too. The best is to reduce foods categorised to the TOP of the pyramid but increase more base foods (foods category with the largest base area of the food pyramid) for a healthy body.

I saw a huge sign on the roadside this morning advertising a plan to lose 30 lbs in 30 days. That is so wrong. People will fall for it and throw away their money.

I have tried all the fad diets at one time or another but only healthy eating and exercise seem to work in the long run. A very informative and well written article.

You can loose 2 KGs a week and for a lot of weeks if you have a lot of weight to shed. As well, the before and after shots are usually a scam but a proper programs uses them as testimony. What you need to be aware of is the fine print. There are some programs out there that the fine print states that this 50 or 60 Kilogram weight loss IS typical. One such program is http://bodyforlife.com … to me this is one of the most sensible programs out there. You eat properly and you exercie.
The most powerful thing for weight lost is muscle. Muscle eats fat more than anything on earth. So, you need to eat correctly, which usually means understanding food and you need to build muscle, not the muscle that bodybuilders go after, just increasing the muscles that you have lost from misuse over the years.
What I really like about this article other than sound advice is the intent of this artilce and that is to help people. Great Article and if you get a bit inspired do not give up!

Good information. I heard from experts that to lose weight is not really difficult, the difficult part is to maintain, which needs a lot of determination.

NOTHING bugs me more than the before and after weight adverts and the advert that sends you the food to your house. It is so blatant that they are all lies but I don’t get why homo sapiens still continue to trust it! A really good article for any one looking to shed a few pounds but often get trapped into these little fads. Really liked reading it because it was something I knew a bit about too!

Nice structured approach – any diet that doesn’t offer proper nutritional balance I steer well clear of – they might work in the short term, but cause real problems long term!
