Keeping Those New Year’s Weight Loss Resolutions

A realistic view on what is a reasonable expectation on the time frame of losing weight.

Most of us make ‘em, and some us even keep ‘em. Getting into shape is one of the most common resolutions there is. Unfortunately, when people discover that getting into shape is kinda hard and takes longer than 2 weeks worth of workouts, they stop. So, here’s a gentle reminder/reality check: Safe weight loss for a female is 1-2 lbs. per week. Safe weight loss for a male is 1-3 lbs. per week. That’s all.

Getting healthy & fit is a lifelong commitment and not something that can be done overnight. Take your commitment & your health seriously. Consistency is key and a few workouts won’t do miracles. It might help to make a contract with yourself regarding your resolutions and post it someplace where you will see it every day. Perhaps even signing your contract every day to ‘renew’ your ongoing commitment to yourself. Remember, if you didn’t get “out of shape” in a few of weeks, it will take more than a few weeks to get “in to shape.” Being patient and having a good grip with reality will go a long way towards staying motivated. Progress is progress, and in the game of weight loss, slow and sure is the clear winner over quick weight loss, which has a much higher incidence of return weight gain.
