Seven Reasons Why You Don’t Want to Get Thin

Being thin has it’s disadvantages. Here are seven reasons why you don’t want to get thin.

As you flip through the fashion magazines and see the ultra thin, sometimes emaciated bodies of the models, you wonder how they can still be smiling. Getting thin carries with it some significant disadvantages that aren’t often considered in a person’s quest to lose weight and achieve the weight and build of a supermodel. What are some of the disadvantages to being thin?

  1. Everyone Will Think You Have an Eating Disorder

Being underweight in this country is so uncommon as an adult, that people will frequently assume you’re thin because you have an eating disorder. With the startling statistics that up to 60% of college age girls have some form of eating disorder, people are more likely than ever to assume you purged to achieve your weight.

  2. If They Don’t Think You Have an Eating Disorder, They’ll Think You’re Dying

You’re going to have a lot of explaining to do when well meaning people approach to ask if you’re feeling well. They’ll give you the old, “You’re so thin”. Be prepared to address this issue several times a week.

  3. You’re Going to Have a Hard Time Finding Clothes That Fit

Clothing manufacturers are altering clothing sizes to accommodate our larger population. Once what would have been a size 8 is not a size 4. What do you do when you can no longer fit into adult clothing? Wear child’s clothing? Have your clothing altered? Getting thin can significantly change your clothing shopping habits.

  4. You’re Going to be Constantly Cold

While everyone else in the restaurant where you’re eating is wearing a sleeveless top and enjoying their dinner, you’re going to be wrapped in your heavy coat attempting to brave the temperature. Restaurants and retail stores have lowered temperatures even lower to meet the needs of our growing overweight population. They seem to have forgotten about the thin people of the world.

  5. People Are Going to Assume You Don’t Eat or Enjoy Food

If they find out you do eat because of your incredible metabolism, you may not be invited to their next social gathering.

  6. People Will Assume You’re Weak and Frail

Even though you may be able to bench press your weight, people are still going to assume you’re so thin that you need help opening doors. Although they may mean well, prepare to feel like they’re being condescending to you.

  7. Being Thin Can Make You Look Older

When you don’t have much body fat, you usually lack facial fat which gives your face a gaunt, tired look. This can be a particular problem if you’re over the age of 40.

As you can see, life’s not always a bed of roses for those who choose to get thin. Being underweight has its own unique set of disadvantages. Instead of concentrating on loosing weight to reach a too thin ideal, why not learn to love and accept who you are?

  1. I would agree that getting too thin is harmful, but so is carrying excessive weight. We should strive for what is healthy for us. I do not believe that being pencil thin is healthy, but obese is not either. We need to be realistic, and not worry about looking like a model, as you so well point out.

  2. HAHAHAHAHAH. Oohh, so much of this is quite the opposite for me.

When I was thin, #5 never happened to me because everyone was always inviting me to restaurants and food gatherings. It was very hard to go to these places because everyone ate crap while the VERY reason why I was thin was because I ate healthy (no starvation, no food restriction, no anything–just healthy food choices almost all the time. I wasn’t eating healthy to be thin, I did it because I genuinely cared about being healthy).

#7 is the opposite for me. BEING THIN MAKES ME LOOK SO MUCH BLOODY YOUNGER =_= No/small hips and breasts certainly, you know. Maybe I’m a special case though ’cause my facial structure makes me look younger though, no matter what my weight is people always say I have very childlike face.

As for the others, yeah, I agree with those disadvantages. They are rather trivial stuff though, especially if you are thin just because you have healthy habits. I would rather put up with those things than being f*****g fat! It sucks so much more :S

  3. I forgot to point out that I am not advocating being too thin or anything like that. In my “when I was thin” statement, I wasn’t too thin at all–just normal slim. I had a BMI of 18-18.5 or something.
