Tips to Help You Drop Those Extra Pounds

Changing your eating habits can be easier than you think. Stay away from the center of the grocery store and shop in the produce and dairy isles. You will have all the healthy low-fat food that is good for you, and the bonus is that you will lose excess weight.

People who sniffed peppermint every two hours ate almost 350 fewer calories a day than non sniffers. According to a study at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia the scent of mint may increase alertness so you’re less likely to eat from boredom or fatigue. Chewing mint gum may also do the same thing.

You can use calories just standing up. Standing doubles your metabolic rate because you need more strength to stand than to sit. It also helps muscles draw fat out of your blood stream. Standing and doing your household chores, walking, playing with the children, will all help you reach your goal weight.

Shake the salt habit. Salt makes you hold water which in turn makes your body inches larger. Any food serving higher than 140 milligrams is too high.

Stay away from the middle isles of your grocery store. That’s where you will find the high salt, high fat, and high calorie content. Don’t limit your diet too drastically. Instead eat healthy, fresh vegetable, fruit, whole grain cereals, fish, chicken, and low fat dairy. Go slow and steady and eat a whole range of healthy food. Eat about 500 less calories a day. That will be easy to do just by choosing veggies, and fruits, rather than fatty, salty foods.

Diet experts say that eating 5 or 6 mini meals a day instead of three big ones and filling up on water-rich, fiber-filled foods can help curb your hunger as your body adjusts to a different and healthier way of eating.

Tell all your friends and family that you are trying to lose weight. One of the toughest challenges is dodging those doughnut someone brings in at the office and the beer and chips your hubby has in the pantry. If people around you know you are trying to lose weight they can at least not unknowingly sabotage your best efforts.

Here are some meal suggestions.

  4. Good advice. I like “Stay away from the middle isles” at the store. That is so true. I have found the easiest way to loose weight for me was to 1. drink lots of water and eliminate soda. 2. work out 3-4 times a week. 3. Do baby steps in order to make life changes and stick with the program. Drastic changes to diet and or workouts won’t stick!

  5. Good advice, I need to lose a few pounds.

  6. Thank you one and all. I appreciate your time and interest. I think we all want to eat a healthy diet and most of us would like to lose a few pounds. And as Josey says if you make too many changes you will not stick it out. Slow and easy is best. Exercise will certainly help and it is always best to exercise but some that may not able to do so can still benefit from a healthy diet. Take care everyone and healthy eating. Ruby

  11. Great advice that I wish I had more discipline to do. (I’ve tried but not lost pounds this summer; oh well–I did lose a size at least.) Having a baby near 40 is very discouraging/frustrating to come back from. Thanks again for the great advice that I just need to “buckle down” on.
